Hello, I'm new here... I'm planning to buy an Acer Aspire 5672 this week (standard spec in Indonesia: Centrino Duo T2300, 512MB RAM, X1400 with 256 MB Hypermemory, 80 GB SATA hard drive-I am gonna upgrade the RAM to 2GB and maybe change the harddisk drive). I just want to ask 5672 owners here... have any of you played Farcry with this machine? How was/is your experience? Can you play @ its native res (1280 x 800) nicely? If the answer is yes, what are the settings?
I know that Farcry is a bit old.. but I like the nice jungle/panorama in that game.
Regards,
Robby

Hi, i didn't try Far Cry yet, sorry.... but i played Boiling point, that is a **** game that sucks much memory, and is similar to Far Cry (search on web...you will find extreme requirements).
Well, because of 512 mb video memory these games run very fine! I used an Acer with a 9700 with 64mb, and the game ran slow. Now it's fast, no lag or problems... -
farcry runs great with everything turned up. i have it on native resolution too. i usually get somewhere around 30 fps, but it jumps around. i was disapointed i couldnt play quake 4 with such good results. im sure when the dual core patch comes out ill be fine but right now i have to overclock my gpu via powerstrip just to get native resolution and medium quality, i might be able to get 28fps and up but it can get laggy. in any event farcry runs great go out and get it.

arnaldo, kwdizzy87, thanks very much for your reply.
To arnaldo: do you play Boiling Point @ 1,280 x 800 res?
To kwdizzy87: what do you mean by 'it jumps around'? Sorry to be so thick but English is not my native language.

Hi,
English is not my native language, too....
Yes I played BP at 1,280 x 800 resolution and max detail level very very fluent!
I've never seen something like that before using this laptop! -
This is very strange because I tried playing Far Cry and couldn't really play it very well on low settings. Is there somthing I should do to tweak my laptop? (I havn't installed any drivers etc. My laptop is pretty much how it was when i bought it apart from it has more programs.)

If you lap-top still has all of its factory settings set up as well as all of the empowering software... it will be slow. Wipe your hard-drive clean, format everything into NTFS, install a fresh clean copy of XP Pro SP2, good drivers (i recommend Omega for the Radeon X1400) and enjoy. The Omega drivers will kick the video performance up a big notch. Having only 512 RAM may be a problem as well...
-
Is there any way I can do that manually? As in, remove what I don't need individually? Because atm, I have alot of work and programs i do not wish to have to reinstall.
-
You can go into add/remove programs in your control panel and delete the programs you dont need... thats how its usually done... But i dont see why you would want to - most of them are VERY useful and save time when it comes down to changing your system's preferences. they allow to do that faster. also they take up almost no space on your HD and VERY little RAM.
i really suggest installing omega drivers instead of the stock ATI catalyst... improves performance by A LOT. make sure to update ur system as well. having fresh XP patches and latest versions of drivers is an important issue when it comes down to sqeezing the last bits of power out of your system. defrag your drives as well... for faster file-accessing.
that should give you a good boost from what it was like out-of-the-box. -
Ugh... i contradicted myself. lol. the empowering software is ok if you are not reinstalling the whole system. if you are, then there is no need for it really. the thing is that if you start deleting it right now, without doing a fresh reinstall, it may cause problems... you never know with acer ha ha

Oh ok. I don't know anything about Omega Drivers though. Are these the one's that i need? Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.231 (Catalyst 6.3)
-
Yep, the latest omega drivers for radeon. Download them. Then go to your ATI Catalyst folder on (deafult) C(Acer):/Program Files/... and select ATI software removal. this will remove ALL of your ATI applications on your system. then restart. the deleting will prolly take osme time... took me at least 5 minutes. this is the best way to get rid of CCC and all of the drivers on your computer. you can also go to the control panel and use add/remove programs and remove everything that has the letters: A T I in its name. lol. but i did it with the ati removing program. both ways are ok though.
then after restart, install the omega drivers. it will ask you whether you have a laptop graphics card or not. pick LAPTOP GRAPHICS CARD. it will disable you from overclocking it, but improves stability by a lot. after you install the omega drivers, restart again... note that you have to manually start up the Omega control center thing... fool around with it as you please. -
Does this break the warranty if I have a Dell E1705?
-
Installing software should not void warranty... you are not breakign any seals or anything. But dont look for tech support from Dell if something goes wrong (which it wont). As far as i am conserned, installing ANY software on your system doesnt void warranty, only hardware changes/replacements/whatever...
-
Ok, i've installed the omega drivers. Is there anyway I can test how well my laptop is going to perform now? (Sorry I'm really new to this stuff)
-
Umm... there is a program called "3D Mark" which you download off the net i think... never used it. but look it up, its there. and just run the program. it will run tests on your computer and give you what's known as "3D Marks" or "scores"... the higher - the better. i say just play a game and set everything ot high. remember that this laptop will benifit from a higher resolution rather than maxed out settings. also try fooling around in the "tray" of your new omega drivers. change some settings... may improve overall performance.

Will do. Thanks for all your help.
