I bought my Acer Aspire 1681WLCi a few years ago and though I've been very pleased with it I've been toying with the idea of buying a new Acer Laptop.
I really like the fact that Acer didn't load the one I have with all kinds of Trialware and useless BS software like most or all other vendors do.
Is this still the case?
One thing I didn't like was having the "C:" drive coming formatted FAT32.
(I know it's easy enough to convert to NTFS but it's just nonsense...there is no rational reason for it coming formatted with an inferior file format.)
Is this still the case?
What do you think of VISTA???
Your answers to these 3 questions will help me decide whether or not to buy another ACER.
Thanks,
Rich

1) Yes acer still do what they always used to do with their notebooks. You get a few fully functioning OEM pieces of software (PowerDVD and NTI CD/DVD maker) these are not any trail (bloatware) programs they are fully activated and work just fine. The only trail is norton antivirus and like before it comes on a separate CD so you can choose not to use it. Other than that you still get the usual acer "E" programs which are easily removed.
2) The FAT32 is still the same, the reason why acer use FAT32 is because their windows recovery process (ALT+F10 remember) uses a very old version of norton ghost which only seems to like FAT32 and doesn't know what NTFS is. To me this isn't really an issue (just a slight annoyance really) as it only takes a minute or so to convert to NTFS and I don't reinstall windows all that often. [I don't know if notebooks with vista pre-installed from the factory still use FAT32 but I know all XP versions use it.]
3) Vista is okay with me I have no problems with it. My 5102 originally came with XP MCE2005 and I removed it and I am now running vista ultimate with no issues. So using vista is really a choice for the user to make some like it some don't.
This aspire 5102 is my second acer in a row my first one was a travelmate 2300 and it is still working to this day. I have never had any problems with either of them (knock on wood) but like all other manufacturers you can get a lemon from time to time.

Thank you for all the info.
Exactly what I wanted to know.
I'm headed for Newegg... to see which Acer laptop should be on my list for Santa.
