I find that most Dells are pretty quiet, but you'd need to read a couple of reviews to be sure

apple laptops are very very quite, i have a 17" MBP, and the only things that you can sort of hear is the HDD, the fan is very very quite. the fan is smartly controlled and is designed to responded quickly to both temperature and CPU usage. once you're not using the cpu/Graphics card, the fan will quickly drop to idle speed also. also, the fan is very very quite and made a wooshing noise instead of an annoying whine.
the CD-drive is also quite, which is impressive.

consider reading http://www.notebookcheck.net/ as to large collection of review of detailed noise emmission of a laptop.

Do not get the Aspire , it is a crap .

Really, do not waste your money just to know how crappy it can be.

It's noisy , gets extremely hot and the plastic material on the laptop is cheap.

Only one good thing about Acer was they accepted my returning the crap(mine was 4920G) as many times as I needed.

And 2 year-warranty and insurance came with it.

when I got fixed its problems completely, I just sold it to my relative who just use it for emailing . Now I have a Lenovo Y510 and it is quiet , only one big problem with this Lenovo is its size and so I leave it at my office.

Oh the Ideapad in Asia is completely different from the American version of it , I did not know this and recommended it to my American friend on line and he was disappointed with it because the US version does not come with T7500 and NV8600GT like mine did.

You can try the Ideapad Y710 , it should be similar to my Y510 with T7500.

Or HP DV9700t series , which comes with NV8600GS not GT.

I probably buying a DV2700T for my school and I rented it several times from my friend , it was a bit noisy with the fan making funny sound but my Acer was even noisier.

I had Satellite M200P435 with T7500 and ATI X2400 , which was the most quiet lappie I 've ever had but it was white and I did not like the palm rest getting dirty, so I got rid of it.

For over all quality, I think HP business line or Lenovo Ideapad(not thinkpads) is the best.

I dont like Sony and Samsung, they are over priced and not at all up-to-date, using old generation GPU , RAM. etc.

Oh also avoid Fujitsu , they are hugely over priced.

What?? Noisy and cheap? Do you know what you are saying? It's only problem is overheat, but on the first hand its not a very big issue, on the second hand its not annoying.

Heh, some older models with AMD sempron processors are VERY noisy, not to mention slow & loud 4200" drives. Better/newer models like 5920 are quiet and (at least mine, despite running at max all the time) also cold.

Ppl should also learn how to use profiles (power & network) -- there is really no need to run laptop at max speed while typing in Word (reduces fan usage quite a lot).

Otherwise, Acer laptops are (imho!) packed with features and you hardly get better stuff for same money.

Unforetunatelly I have no experience with Acer 17" laptops, so I can only speak about 15.4" :)
