for some strange reason i can't get the Kensington page to load,,
but the memory pictured should work...
    but check this link..
    http://corsair.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?vcode=PGCRS&partnum=VS1GSDS667D2

    http://www.corsairmemory.com/configurator/corsair_custom.aspx?id=452940

be sure to get PC5300 or higher so if u upgrade to a faster CPU your memory speeds will be able to go higher than the 533Mhz that the PC4200 supports.

the page you linked to only shows model#s and not actual memory specs..
while the PC4200 is all that is required the PC5300 costs little if any extra,,, and has the advantages of faster speeds...

    later,
    bigO

Thanks, I just want to make sure that it is the MEMF and not the MEME one because this is a workplace laptop and the boss is ordering it. I'll be in trouble if it is the wrong one :p I googled both MEMF and MEME and I couldn't really tell the difference. The speed doesn't really matter to me as long as the stick is compatible with the notebook. That's all I'm worried about.

Is it true about the 5315 being able to handle 4GB of memory (2 2GB sticks)?

I see a reference to it but nothing really firm. :D

I have GSkill 1 GB sticks in there now but would like to go to 2GB sticks if I can. The following link has a reference saying:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231135

This thing flies with 2GB and XP loaded. Next question would be whether XP will see the full 4GB or will just the Vista? I am dual-booting.

    Thanks fellas. Great stuff here.

You'll need to have a 64-bit operating system to utilize all 4GB of RAM. Otherwise, your system will "see" 3.5GB or less.

ACER ASPIRE 5315's with 4 gigs of RAM installed tend to have CONSTANT BSOD errors... your best bet for now (until ACER addresses the issue) is to go with a total of 3gigs of ram... (a 1gig dimm and a 2 gig dimm)

while the chipset supports it and the laptop will USUALLY BOOT w/ 4 gigs... 99% of the time you have a lockup within the first 1 minute of use

Q1. is vista 64bit os(as noted here) opposed to xp-32bit?

----so my aspire 5315 with vista will accept 4gb ram -no problems?

Q2.alternatively,if i was to add 2gb stick next to the existing 1gbtotalling 3gb,

---are there any issues with coupling two different brand names of ram, more importantly-- two different ram speeds?
(eg,533mhz,667mhz,800mhz-are some of the specs' i see on sale items)

note:my old desktop had 3three sticks totalling 1.5gb.first stick-333mhz,other two- are 400mhz-i didnt look when i bought the upgrade! -but seems to run fine.
    thanks for the tips!

    ok,
q1 no. vista comes in 32 and 64 bit versions. the laptop (well i reckon it's the os) can't handle 4gb at this stage. i have tried it myself, but have gone back to 3gb because it won't even boot with 4gb in there. it turns on and gets up to the loading windows bar, then blue screens and restarts. comes up with some sort of memory addressing error, even tried to reinstall windows with 4gb and it wouldn't even run properly, same error, so i gave up.

q2 you can use different speeds, but the computer will run at the lowest speed, so if you have a 2gb stick of pc4200 (533mhz) and a 1gb of pc5300 (667mhz) it will run at 4200 (533). i wouldn't bother with 800mhz ram unless you can get it cheap (ie, cheaper than what you could get 667 for). the fastest these laptops support at this stage is 667, so anything above that will be slowed to that speed. oh and as for different brands, that doesn't matter either. I have one stick of 2gb ocz and 1gb hynix and they run fine together

    good luck, hope that helps

as far i know, you meant kingston !
i think that kensington doesn't make ram modules.

in france there's a website that sells kingston ram modules with an online ram finder wizard. ( www.ramshopping.fr)
but they don't show the possibility to buy a 2 gig module for Aspire 5315
    i'll try your links.

Kensington is a store, Kingston is a RAM producer ;).

You need to buy a 2GB DDR2 PC-5300 RAM. It doesn't have to be Kingston you can get Corsair for example.

By the way, stop bumping old threads, you could've continued asking in the 5315 upgrade thread.

    Hello,
is it possible to put PC2-6400 800 200pins SODIMM on aspire 5315 ?
because i've done a cpu upgrade (a t9500 cpu) and it is a fsb 800 cpu.
is the number after PC2-6400 (ie 800) the frequency of fsb of the rams ?

First of all, stop multiposting and have some patience, after all this is a forum not an IM!

Buying PC2-6400 is useless as 5315 has the GL960 Santa Rosa chipset which have limitation of 667Mhz. So the sticks will work but WILL DOWNCLOCK to 667Mhz.

    Fine, whatever.

    Hi

Im new here--been reading thru the forums for some time now & finally decided to register so I could post (both questions & answers).

Anyway, I know this might be a bit redundant but I wanted to double check since I seem to find differing info about RAM upgrades for the Aspire 5315. I have not upgraded any hardware on my notebook (dont intend to atm). I just want more memory & want to make sure I'm getting the right stuff.

I used the scanner @ crucial.com & as I expected, it told me the amount (2GB) & type (DDR2 PC-5300 200pin) of RAM I *should* buy (their brand, of course). Here are my notebook specs (just briefly):

    # Acer Aspire 3515-2875
    # Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
    # Currently Installed Memory: 1GB (2 x 512mb)
    # Available Memory Slots: 0
    # Number of Banks: 2
    # Dual Channel Support: Yes
    # CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    # CPU Family: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 540 @ 1.86GHz Model 6, Stepping 1
    # CPU Speed: 1862 MH
    # OS: Vista 32bit

I want to upgrade to 2GB. I saw this @ eBay & thought the price was perfect: SAMSUNG 2GB 2 x 1GB 200 pc2-6400 DDR2 800MHz (for less than 20bux AND free shipping within Canada)

However, I wasnt 100% sure if I could install the pc2-6400 DDR2 800MHz RAM instead of the "proper" DDR2 PC-5300 RAM. If its a question of my system downclocking but still working fine, that would be totally okay since I would be saving money.

My second question, which is related to the first, is:

My friend also has some modules that he said he'd just give me, but they are also the PC2-6400 (dont remember the brand) & one is a 1GB stick, the other is 2GB (or *maybe* both are 2GB--Id have to check). Even though crucial.com & Futureshop/etc say you *HAVE* to stick with the maximum amount of RAM Ive been reading otherwise & someone told me that you *can* install more than the max (in my case, 2GB), like say 3-4GB but the OS would only recognize up to 3GB.

If I were to install my friend's pc2-6400 RAM (1GB in one slot, 2GB in the other slot, or 2GB in each--again, I'll ask him), would that mess up my system or would it be okay and operate with noticeable improvement (even if it recognizes less than whats actually inserted)?

Thank you, SO much, in advance, for any & all advice/etc. It would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    FOJO

PS: Kensington is also a 'market'/very cool area in Toronto, Ontario ;)

    Welcome to NBR.

    1. I assume you made a typo there and you mean Aspire 5315 not 3515 ;)
    2. Yeah PC-6400 should work but will downclock to 667Mhz(or 533Mhz, depending on the CPU you have. Due the fact you have a Celeron I think the RAM will downclock to 533Mhz.)
    3. OK there is this thing called limitation.
    - 32bit OS can recognize 3,25-3,5GB of RAM max. Period. If you have more installed you just won't be able to use the RAM beyond the 3MB point.
    - Your laptop have a Santa Rosa chipset *budjet version* which have a RAM limit of 2GB. For some reason though, in certain slot/stick combination, in Aspire 5315 you can actually use 3GB.

To sum up: you can install 3GB max in your laptop. I think you can use PC-6400 but it's a waste because it will downclock big time. You'll probably notice some performance boost(especially if you're running Vista) but don't expect miracles. The CPU in your laptop is the real bottleneck, if I were you, I'd get a cheap C2D socket P for like 50 bucks and 2GB of PC-5300. In this case you'll see a real performance boost ;)
    Good luck.

Thanks, ATG, for pointing out my typo, lol. :err:

Yeah, running good old Vista. Do you think putting XP on would improve performance versus just adding more RAM to the current Vista setup? Ive done as much as I can to 'tweak' things in Vista to speed things up, make my notebook perform better but Im REALLY thinking of taking Vista off & putting XP on. Any thoughts on that are welcome.

Hm, interesting. I'll have to look into this, never thought to do anything w/the cpu. Bugger that this is the "real bottleneck" as you put it. Any suggestions as to brand/manufacturer? Any to avoid?

Thanks again ATG!! Youre SO helpful!!

    Cheers,

    FOJO

No matter what OS you're running I suggest you upgrade to at least 2 GB of RAM. Windows like the RAM so the more the better.
If you keep your current configuration(CPU+RAM) then yeah I suggest you install XP if you can, as I'm sure Vista is not running smoothly now is it?

Brand...you have no choice here - Intel CPU it is. Aspire 5315 support dualcore and C2D CPUs socket P with max FSB 800Mhz. BIOS update might be required.
For more CPU info check The Ultimate CPU Guide and Intel Mobile Processor Compatibility Guide.

By the way what task are you running on your laptop?

Santa Rosa chipset has the following limitation: FSB 800Mhz RAM 667Mhz.

FSB and RAM speed are different things

    Hi All

Okay, so I was gonna buy some RAM on eBay for my Acer Aspire (2GB RAM, DDR2 667MHZ PC2 5300 SODIMM 200PIN) In the search results I got quite a few listings for both notebooks AND MAC books.

Just for examples sake, here is one listing:

4GB Memory 4 GB RAM For iMac Apple Laptop Macbook Pro

(Here is the original search result link--there are others that came up for different notebooks as well as Mac books):

    eBay search results for "DDR2 PC-5300 200pin"

Is the Mac book ram compatible with notebooks? All the info was the same (the ram specs/etc) so I assume so, but I dont want to assume wrong.

Thanks, in advance, for your reply!

    FOJO

ps: thx, btw to ATG re: my previous Acer RAM Q's---awesome info/advice!

as far as I know there should be no problems as long as it 200 pin...the only consideration I have come across is high density and low density...they might call it Mac RAM b/c its low density or maybe b/c it was pulled out of a MAC, of course I'm no expert just been going to google computer college and you can't always trust the info you get there...they say low density is 99.9% compatible while high density is only 10%...personally I think this is old info...I'd guess that more and more chipsets support high density...to stay safe you might just go for low density...

here's a question I have to anyone who may know why does my computer not boot when one stick is in the first slot but will when the other is in the first slot..is it b/c I have two different sizes or two different speeds...I currently have 1 pc2 5300 512mb and 1 pc2 4200 1gb

I can not find the location of RAM in Acer Aspire 5315. Currently Inexpensive RAM modules are available at the computer markets in Canberra, so upgrade is within reach.

But where is the RAM - is it under the keyboard?

Please point me to the right direction...

It's not under the keybord; you'll need to open the bottom door, where the cpu is located. See this photo(thanks to BigO):

This happened to me when I recently (well, last month) doubled my 1GB RAM -- popped in a 2GB stick along with one of the original 512MB modules -- whoops  ! Didnt boot. I removed the 512MB, put the 2GB in & no problemo, booted up just fine. :D

Now, that doesnt answer the "WHY" about that particular question, but I thought I'd post to let you know that youre not the only one its happened to. When I have time, I'll try to find the answer cuz I'd REALLY like to increase the RAM to 2.5GB if I can. I just havent bothered trying since I upgraded (part laziness/part lacking time :p )

Absolutely, agreed -- EXCELLENT photo w/info, perfect visual!

I was gonna post a pic of my own after seeing your question, OldAl (I was messing about w/my own Acer, so recently took pics of the removed bottom & "guts" to help my Dad do a long distance RAM install). ATG beat me to the punch, lol, BUT I'm just glad that someone came to your aid -- thats what its all about ;)

Normally the 5315 is limited to 2Gb MAX.

BUT, for a reason I'm not able to explain, it's possible to go up to 3Gb at the condition we put the RAMs in the right slots. So in our case, there is just 2 slots, so 2 possibilities. If your computer don't boot, just try to swap memory module...

I have, it works really fine and stable with cheap EOM chips... (noname) ;)

I have upgraded my acer 5315 from celeron m 540 1.86mhz to c2d t8300. Afterwards I tried to upgrade RAM to 3 GBs. But it did not work. I have tried nearly 20 different rams (2gb+1 gb) but it did not work. At last I gave up and installed 1gb + 1 gb. My OS is W7 Ultimate 32bit.

But it is a little wierd since thre are lots of examples with 3 gb ram.

Who knows of the right 1 and 2 gig ram cards to get and which goes in which slot? Thanks. I tried searchin for ram, but got like 64000 hits on eBay, so the choices are daunting and I wanna get the right ones first. Thanks so much.
