If you did a graphic show-down between the Aspire 2012WLMi and the Ferrari 3000LMi, the 2012LMi with its Radeon 9700 64 mb video card, and the Ferrari 3000LMi with its 9200 128 mb, which would win?
Which card has more power in the graphic deparment, when displaying games? Which card could squeek out a better FPS in Far Cry? Any ideas or graphic tests to prove it?
This a question about these two laptops ONLY, with these two video cards. Forget the faster beasts, just tell me which of these two would be better for a game like Far Cry.
Thx!

I think the 2012 would win because of the ATI 9700 graphics chip. I know the Ferrari has 128MB, but it's an ATI 9200 which does not have the power of the 9700.
Again, the 9700 will out perform the 9200 any day. Far Cry is a very graphics intensive game and therefore would need a very high powered GPU to make everything look good especially at the higher resolutions. Here's the ATI Mobile Chip Comparison Chart which shows that the performance level of the 9200 is @10X & their 9600 (9700 not listed yet) is rated @23X, so the 9700 should be a lot higher.
A higher CPU with a great video card would be the ideal choice, but since it's out of these 2 units, I would personally say the 2012 would be the better choice. A Pentium M 1.5Ghz CPU is approx. equivalent to a Mobile Pentium 4 2.1Ghz CPU (based on a 1.4 multiplier). Another reason I would say the 2012 is because the 9200 chip is not DirectX 9 compliant, so you won't get all the graphics support this game needs.

the 64mb of ram doesn' matter nearly as much as the power of the chip driving it, and the CAS rating of the RAM they use on the chip.
Also, the 9600 and above are the only ATI cards with directx 9 so for best performance you would have to get the 9700.

like everyone else said so far, the 9700 will win over the 9200. honestly, not many games even use 128 megs of video ram yet.. besides far cry, and Doom III/HL2 whenever they come out.

Great! Thx guys, I will go with the 2012WLMi. I have a line on a good deal, and I'll let you know once I manage to get it. Then I'll do a benchmark.

errr... excuse the sp up there. (explores)
I found that the extra 64MB on the video was not worth the cost to move from the 2012wlmi to the 2025.
The difference is so minimal. If you get a game that runs a bit slow turn down the texture detail one notch to fix your shortage of memory. It's a laptop, not a full fledged gaming rig. -
Although this link is to a Mac forum it illustrates the difference between 64MB and 128MB make on Radeon M10 and M11 (9600 and 9700 Mobility) video processors.

It also expores the difference a high speed hard drive vs a 4200rpm drive will make on a laptop.
Radeon 9700 64 mb vs. Radeon 9200 128 mb
