What are you using to check your memory usage?

Windows Vista needs alot of RAM thats why you are running low performance.

Vista needs AT LEAST 512 MB of RAM.

I am a little confused by your comment about Vista having a cpu monitor. Memory and cpu useage are in most cases not really connected. It is possible to run something very cpu intensive that has a small memory footprint and vise versa.

The best advice is to get more ram. There are so many things that chew it up, it almost seems like you can't have too much. I don't run the live messenger but maybe there are some settings you can change to lessen the memory used. You may also have things running on startup that don't need to and they also eat memory.
