When using word processing applications, the cursor jumps to another part of the document and I type where it jumps to.
I have tried various WP applications: Word, Open Office, Works and Notepad. All have this cursor movement.
Acer Aspire 5720z
Windows Vista HP
Any ideas?

I would try touchfreeze:
http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/ -
you could also try Palm checkin your touchpad settings.
or if you have a USB mouse plug that in and make sure your touchpad is switched off when you plug in the mouse.
if the cursor still jumps after that then i'm not sure what it is but will try and find you an answer.
need laptop model please as this would help.
all the best and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply guys.
For the record, turning off tapping in mouse options did the trick. -
next time this problem appears we now have a good idea what to do.
thanks again.

I just bought an Acer Aspire 5520 on Saturday, and this was driving me totally nuts. I am truly in your debt! -
if your problems with the cursor continue,, try downloading an ALPS touchpad driver,,,, since installing in my lappy i've had 0 cursor issues

This helped me fix the problem on my 5315 as well. I updated my ALPS touchpad to the latest version on the Acer Europe ftp site, and it no longer jumps around. For what it's worth, I'm now running 7.0.1101.17. I was previously running 7.0.1101.11 that was causing the problems.

I had this problem on my 4315 and downloaded the synaptics driver...fixed my problem...for all you out there with 4315...
its crazy I think they kinda slap these budget laptops together...I got mine on ebay for $150.00...I know someone bought it and got rid of it b/c of all the little bugs...I mean when I got it, it ran hot, wouldn't connect to the internet (then after I got that driver it wouldn't stay connect esp. on battery power) and the mouse pad jumped so much it was impossible to type a whole sentence...after about 5 hours of google magic I had it all fixed..not the heat issue but I had a celeron m in my last cheap-o, so I already had a cooling fan...I must say that the celeron m 540 is way faster than than my old celeron m 1.5ghz I think that was a 4** model...so I upgraded to 2 gig RAM, and honestly I don't know why everyone hates on vista...with 2 gigs RAM it runs fine...I can see how someone without the ganas to work on the lil bugs would just feel ripped off...but b/c they mass produce these guys they have to use easily upgradable components...though they would never tell you, you can upgrade most of this laptop...I've got a T7100 on the way (scored it for 30 bucks on ebay) to cure my heat problems and after watching a vid linked in this thread am excited to know I can upgrade my cd-rw/dvd-rom to a dvd-rw...so as of now I've spent
$150.00 for the laptop
$22.00 for 2 gig RAM
$30.00 for T7100 c2d cp
$202.00 total
now I'm thinking another 50-100 for a dvd-rw and I'll have quite the machine for $250.00-300.00 its amazing...I was hestitant to buy this laptop b/c I couldn't understand why it could be so cheap...then in researching I heard all the problems and was like oh no...but then I realized these were all fixable problems due to the nature of tossing together random compatible parts on multiple Operating Systems...once I got all the drivers and updated the BIOS all the kinks were worked out...can't wait to get the new cpu to solve this heating problem and be able to multi task...though I must reiterate the celeron m 540 is darn fast for single thread apps ( I hear its just a c2d without stepping and only with one core and half the cache) anyways anyone out there thinking about picking up one these guys don't hesitate, you can't beat it for the price
ALSO big ups to Bigzone and Wolf and everyone else who takes the time to come on here and share good info...you've been an invaluable resource for me THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU -
the 4315 is a good laptop, you get what you pay for.
but we on here are not happy with just sitting about and being happy with what we have got.
so we pull things to bits then upgrade......we love it.
Nice Post Miah

I just registered to this site a few minutes ago because of the problem with my cursor jumping around. Thanks for helping already. I have an Aspire 5920. Apparently this is a common problem with touchpads.
