    Hi there,
I own an Acer as5520 which i think is a nice laptop. The thing is it runs Windows Vista Home and it has 1gb of ram. It is very slow when running windows. After all i have read i have come to a conclusion, that i have to put more RAM into it. I thought about 2gb or 4. What do you think? Is 2 enough? Ussually i run little memory consuming applications such as IE, windows media player and so. I would like to use photoshop and i heard that for that 4gb is recommended, but i fear it would be a waste of money.

So the big question is 2gb or 4gb?

    The specs are :
    Athlon 64 X2 1.7ghz
    1GB RAM
    Geforce 7000m 384 mb shared
    160gb HDD

If you use Photoshop heavily, 4GB of RAM might be a good idea. Otherwise 2GB should suffice.

    gabibyte,

["So the big question is 2gb or 4gb?"]

The answer is neither: Put in 3 GB total -- A 2GB module and a 1GB module.

    32-bit Vista can't read 4GB anyway.

So 3GB would be the most cost-effective and efficient solution.

    Well, not really!

If you put two memory modules of different size, you will end up disabling the Dual Channet (DDR) feature of this type of RAM, thus slowing a bit the computer.

I would suggest to upgrade to Vista 64 bit and put 4 Gigs of RAM (expensive) or stay with Vista 32 bit and 2 Gigs of RAM (1 gig module per slot).

I have an Asus G1S with Vista 32 bit and 2 gigs of RAM and it works really great under heavy load on Photoshop, Premiere, Encore, etc...

By the way... My brother just got this Acer Aspire AS5520 lappie from Circuit City and it's really nice indeed! :)

    Happy holidays!

    Yes, really.

Because in practical application, no one here (including you and I) would ever notice any "slowing" due to any such difference, real or imagined.
