I have a Acer Aspire 5315-2153 that I bought at Wal Mart last year. When I first bought it I burned the recovery program onto 9 CDs since I don't have a DVD burner. I installed Linux Ubuntu 7.10. Being the dummy that I am I removed the Vista Basic OS. I tried using the CDs that I burned and the 1st CD started the program and asked for the 2nd CD to be inserted. After the 2nd CD runs, it gives me an error message and stops the recovery process. I've been using Ubuntu since and although I like its stability, it's just not a very flexible OS. I have Windows software that I want to use but I don't have Windows! I've tried the CDs a couple times during this time period and have not been successful. I just found this forum today and hope someone can help me out. Is there anyone else that has had this problem? Is there anything that I can do to make the CDs work?

It's still under warranty so I might call Acer up if I can't get the CDs to work. Will Acer charge me for a recovery disc?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I dunno about Acer but when I had a Toshiba laptop, they offered to send me a free recovery disc when my original was thought to be defective. However, that was when the discs came with the laptop. Nowadays because the discs don't come with the laptop, they will probably charge you or everyone can just call in and ask for a disc. Worth a try though.

did you delete the hidden recovery partiton when you installed linux?

if so then your best bet may be to send it to acer or just buy a set of recovery dvds from them....

I'm not sure. I might have.

Do you know how much they charge for the discs? I can't be without my computer so sending it in is not an option.

All right Mr bigozone .. if you get that low prices for them, i like one my self too. :)

Yes 70€ in Greece , and some one from England report 50 UK Pounts.

The only site that i found them, selling them On-line, are in Canada .. But they ask the notebook serial , and my serial is not on their system .

    So , thats a dead end , for cheap DVD's overseas . :(

I tried the online order form for the recovery on Acer's site too. My serial number didn't work either. I sent them an e-mail so I'll have to see what they say.

half the time my serial # shows up as invalid when entering it anywhere on thier site... your best bet is to try to talk a customer service rep into giving you a free copy... when that fails... tell them you have already tried the on-line order form, and explain how you have trouble w/ entering your serial# antime it is asked for..

it actually took me 3 tries to get my laptop registered, thier on-line system rejected my SN even though i was copy/pasting it straight from the ACER E-Tech app!!!

    thier database sucks!!

So Acer responded and for some reason the S/N works now. Before I order the disc for $30 I was wondering if someone can tell me if it will work if I wiped the whole HD when I installed Linux and there is no trace of the eRecovery or Windows left?

If the product are called as "NAPP" , Yes .. that is what it does , and thats the reason of the price tag . :)

    EDIT::

BUY THE DISKS,, best $30 you will spend on your laptop unless you can find an upgrade socketP core2duo CPU for $30 ;)

those celerons suck... check my upgrade thread

do you still have a C: & D: partition, or did your venture into linux wipe out the D: and leave you with one large C: only?

if that is the case (C: only) then you may have success by creating a D: partition and name it ACERDATA (format it fat32, you can change it later)

i have seen recovery disks fail when they can't find both partitons...

    it's worth a try.

They call it an 'Acer Recovery Media' and there is no mention of NAPP. I think I'm desperate enough to give it a try though.
