OK, this laptop I have didn't come with an Acer Windows disc from the factory. Not sure why, but whatever.

I have an old Windows XP disc from a MAXDATA laptop, and then a Windows XP Pro SP2 disc that I got through my school for my PC when I reformatted it last year.

Can I use the SP2 disc (or the MAXDATA; though preferably the SP2) to completely do a fresh reformat on this Acer laptop?

Or do I need to call up Acer Support here in Europe and ask them to mail me the Windows recovery discs???

    Just make them yourself.

Open Empowering Technology. Click on Acer eRecovery management. Enter six zeros. Click on option 2 (restore factory default). Click next. Choose restore factory default system. Click next. Tick yes and recovery will start from your recovery patition.

    Cheers,
    Theo

My girlfriend used Partition Magic a year or so ago to change the file system from FAT32 to NTFS. I read that if you do that, the recovery partition will no longer work. Is that true?

have you tried Alt+F10 at the acer splash screen.
if you haven't touched the recovery partition all should be ok.

check in disk management to make sure the PQService is still healthy.
then if it works ok Burn the recovery DVD's.

Alright Theo mate long time no see.

me and wife went out and got the Wii with mario cart so been playing on-line. what laugh.

one question, most of the info on recovery is on your laptop when you first get it. and you are asked to burn the dvd's/cd's when you first start the thing.
    why don't people burn them ? :(

I honestly don't know. Point is, you can burn the discs later too (like my post replied). I know it works because I burnt disks when I received my lappie and then about 6 months later too. They all work.

But no PQ Service partition = no chance to burn discs.

    Enjoy Mario cart :p

    Cheers,
    Theo

Well I've got the forum to mail away for Windows discs from Acer.

If you have a Windows that loads up, but after the Windows screen it goes to black and doesn't boot, what would the problem possibly be? The HDD light stops blinking and the screen is just black.

Now, however, if I throw in a Windows recovery disk from a much older laptop (still Windows XP), then go so far as to decide which partition to install Windows on or delete/create a partition but then CANCEL the process - the computer restarts and Windows works like a charm.

My question is this: Where the hell does the problem lie? Is it in the installed Windows or the HDD or the motherboard ... what is the problem? When I put the disk in, I make no changes to Windows or the computer or whatever. Only the boot order. This has got me scratching my head.
