Trying to bring an old Acer Travelmate 4000 back to life .. have all but sound working .. all the drivers are in and it claims it is working properly etc... But no sound from the headphones at all...

I see it has a card lot of some type on the side ... and the shop I got it from has a usb card that will go into it so I an plug in a USB sound card .. anyone done this or know about it and what parts and softare I will need?

Oh the onboard USB ports are damaged so I can't use them

I understand a fair bit about Desktops but I have never even used a laptop till now so be gentle ;)

I am trying to get it stable enough to take to my Ma in the hospital so she can have something to do ... and it would be great if I could get sound so she can watch ( and listen) to movies too :D

Also this touchpad seems a bit whacked .. this common
it seems to decide to click on something while I'm moving the pointer across whatever .. Would a mouse stop this from happening?

    Cheers

    For starters.

I suggest you reinstall your touchpad drivers. You can find out the model etc. in the devices list. My guess is it may be a Synaptics.

It is possible that if you have already reinstalled the drivers to your onboard sound your headphone jack is not working it is quite possible that your headphone jack is damaged. Very common occurence.

If ^^ doesnt work after reinstalling drives then:

Does your computer have an PCMIA slot? If so you can get an adaptor which would slide into the PCMIA slot and provide you with a headphone jack/mic in.

Post back and let me know! Good luck!

I did reinstall the soundcard drivers and I did try the touchpad drivers as well, I think it is sticking.. This lappy musta seen alot of use ... the paint is worn off the left clik button LOL

Ya it does have a PCMCIA slot so I will be trying that next .. hopefully that and the mouse port works :)

    Thanks Jaycee

OK I got a PCMCIA card adapter with 2 USB 2.0 ports... one port I am using for the mouse and it's fine... I got a Creative X-FI surround 5.1 USB Soundcard to plug into the other USB port. Did the install etc... did the restart and BOOM  BSOD.. and it will BSOD until I unplug the soundcard... Dunno what that's about?...I hooked up the Soundcard to my PC and it works fine... matter of fact real fine LOL .. But still leaves me without sound for the lappy though ... any ideas on why it would bluescreen the lappy? I know it is underpowered as far as RAM goes but that shouldn't cause a BSOD ... should it?

Now it has a reliable mouse anyways :D 1 down, 1 to go ;)
