I am working on a friend's Aspire 5520, installing RAM and "reinstalling" Vista. I wanted to get the cleanest install I could, so rather than use the restore partition on the HDD, I ordered the recovery discs for her ($20 + S&H !!)

I thought this might be a bit more flexible in the restore process. I realize that this is not a straight Vista install (is it?) but more of a reimaging. I would prefer to do a clean straight Vista install, but all I have is a Dell Vista Home Premium disc and I do not know exactly what drivers to download.

Anyway, I wiped the HDD completely, destroying all partitions. When I insert the first Restore disc (after prompted by the System disc) I breifly get a message that the disk is being partitioned, then I get a "Recovery32: Type Mismatch" error and the process stops.

    What is the problem?

Note: She is out of warranty and I have emailed tech support, but any advice would be great.

P.S. I DESPISE the fact that some OEM's are not including OS discs.

PK - did anyone ever respond to you way back then?

I also need to restore my 5520 to factory defaults and read your thread with horror.

I was hoping to find an image disk of the image that is supposed to be on the hidden "service" partition - which I have readily accessable on my main system.

I don't know what or where that image is exactly on that partition. If you might know where on that partition the image would be I could burn a disk of it and send you out one if you still needed it. Don't know how that compares to the actual Acer disk. Or maybe I could grab a copy of the disk you got from Acer.

Anyway, hope you still visit here.

It sounds like a nightmare that you went through.
