    Hi,

I am very interested in buying the Acer TM291LMi[ :)], but there is an issue that is difficult to know in advance : how silent is it ? Is the fan on often [?]? This is really important to me ... I am always connected and I have several programs running at the same time and I don't want the fan to be on every 5 minutes ... Also, I have an external USB 2.0 hard disk, do you think it can overheat the machine ?
Thank's for any comments and help !
    Jacques

I don't have one of these units, so I can't comment on the loudness of the fan, but since this is a Pentium-M unit, it will run cooler than a P4-M. The fan will usually kick in after a certain temp is reached for about 15-20 seconds. So running several apps at one time will put an additional load on the system, therefore making the fan run more often. So there is the possibility it may come on every 5 minutes or so. Having an external USB HDD connected will not overheat the unit. Acutally, I don't think there is anything you can do that will overheat the unit, other than blocking the vent holes or jamming the cooling fan.

    Hi qwertz,
If it has the Pentium M (not Pentium -M) CPU it will run cooler than any other CPU. What will determine if the fan runs or not is the load put on the CPU and the speed of the CPU, the faster the CPU the more heat that needs to be disipated. If the two programs running at the same time are CPU intensive (using 75% or more of the available CPU cycles) the the fan will run alot or maybe always. It also depends on the temperature of the room the notebook is in, if it's in a classroom with no A/C and it's 80F inside, then the fan may run even if ther is very little load on the CPU.

    hope this helps
    Jack
