    Hi

My acer 8204 is totally "stock" and it takes maybe 5-10 seconds max to get to the login screen. Then after I type my password, it takes about 3-5 minutes to get everything completely loaded. If I try to even open my Documents during this time, it will freeze completely.

I am willing to lose some of the Acer software if it will increase performance, but I want to make sure Windows has the same or similar utilities that I can use. I would still like the option to change the screen brightness, CPU speed, etc.

After starting up, it flies, everything is amazingly fast. And shutdown is done in under 10 seconds also. I have 69 processes running right now, and the programs using the most under my username besides firefox is MsMpEng.exe and ePower_DMC.exe and ccApp.exe Thanks

69 processes??? Wow, that's the most I think i've heard of. I've got 27 running here for comparisons sake.

There are loads of things you can disable in msconfig or services.msc to make it run faster. What I recommend running msconfig, and recording what is running on startup. If you post them here I'm sure some folks here can help you out with what is good and bad.

Personally, I uninstall every piece of Acer software when I got my two laptops. Go into add/remove programs, and get rid of them all. Epower management is a waste of space, you don't need control over the CPU speeds as the processor does that on its own. As for adjusting screen brightness, you can do taht via the keyboard (FN and then the horizontal arrow keys)

To give you an idea of what I have gotten rid of, here is a list of disabled programs from my startup on msconfig. I've just given the startup name, i'm not going to include location or command.

    ALCMTR
    DkIcon
    Monitor
    HKCMD
    igfxpers
    igfxtray
    IMJPMIG
    Alaunch
    ImScInst
    NeroCheck
    TINTSETP
    TINTSETP
    qttask
    RTHDCPL
    jusched
    Adobe Reader Speed launch
    Intervideo WinCInema manager
    Microsoft Office.

Of course, you will not have all of these programs installed so they won't appear, but I'm guessing a lot of them will. Also, it is a good idea to stop the program ati2evxx from starting, to do this go to Start>Run> type in Services.msc You will see a program called ATI Hot Key Poller. Double click and then make sure it is set to Disabled. CLick ok and there ya go.

*Disclaimer* All of these things work fine for me, and the vast majority of people out there, but may not for you. I don't go around disabling programs until I've gotten a good idea of what that does. If in doubt type the process name, or the .exe file into google and find out about what it does and if it can be safely stopped. So if in doubt, check first.

EDIT: You posted jsut as i was typing the bulk of this message. Only way to get that info is to type it in manually. As far as I know anyway. Just shrink your windows so you can see what your typing from, whilst you write the message.

Well to start, go to Start>Run> type in msconfig. Go to the startup tab and remove any listings that I have put above. There are a few I've listed that show up on yours. For others, type the process into google (ie. just type inQtZgAcer.exe and search) and see if it is safe to remove or not. As I sad i before, I would personalyl remove the Acer software that comes with teh laptop, you can always reinstall it should you need to, and it really does just clog up the registry.

SVChost are system files, don't mess with them. That's normal, I have 4 listed in my processes.

Hmm I was planning on dumping the ePower Management because all it does it allow me to change the screen brightness and other stuff which windows allows me to do already.

Gravisense is Acer's hard drive protector (put HD head in lock position when too much motion detected). It is unknown how effective it is, but you may want to keep. Though I have reported that Acer's apps can interfere with other applications that interact with system hooks.

Seems Acer apps are note the best written.
