    HI,
I have an Acer Aspire 5000. I just got it about a year ago. I have had to send it to Acer 3 times for a screen issue. I will be in the middle of something and all of a sudden the screen becomes a bunch of colored vertical lines. I cannot do anything but hard boot at that point. All three times I had it in they said they could not duplicate the problem. Perhaps there is someone that has had this problem and knows what the issue is, and something I could do. I have to use my laptop almost every day for work and I travel so it is hard to be without it to send it in.
Thanks in advance for any help!

It does get very hot. Not sure about the cpu. It does have a history of completely shutting off on me too. In addition to the screen issues. The fan runs fine. Kicks on and off. Is not plugged. Was cleaned and replaced. Is there anything I can do to get it to run cooler to prevent this. It usually happens when I start running a game or a Norton Virus Scan.

It might be the same problem that I had with my Travelmate 370 - do you find that tapping the keyboard will sometimes clear it? I finally tracked the problem down to a loose connector. You should only check this if you feel competent to open up your laptop and if your warranty has expired.
I don't know if your laptop is the same as mine but there are two ribbon connectors under the keyboard which link the display to the motherboard.
One is at the top left and one is at the bottom middle. Acer failed to fix the problem on mine twice but loosening and retightening the bottom middle ribbon cable connector fixed my problems with lines across the display.
    Cheers
    Mike

Is this what you are referring to? http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=109056

As you can see from that thread it happens to a wide range of acer owners, it has happened to me twice since I got my 5102. From the thread you can see a number of users theorize what the problem could be but none of them are really sure. The only way to get passed it is to do a hard restart but the strange thing is that it causes no errors in the system log therefore it becomes very hard to say what is really going on. Acer is not going to fix it if they cannot reproduce it and as you can see from the thread it happens at random times with the seeming cause being different for each user.

I have had this happen on my 5684 too. Straight after I installed NHC. I ran 3D Mark 2003 and it did the same as some of the pics on the link above. So I rebooted and tried again. Still lines. Ran 3DMark 2006 no problem. Ran 3D Mark 2001SE no problem. Tried 3D Mark 2003 again. Still lines. The computer was never moved or had any kind of flexing. Now what?

I unistalled NHC and rebooted the Notebook. Tried 3D Mark 2003 again. Problem gone. Reinstalled NHC and rebooted. Till this day (problem was 2 Months ago) never had another hassle with any graphics. 3D Mark 2003 runs fine. NHC runs happily and I believe the problem is solved.

I think that it has something to do with rebooting the computer straight after installing NHC. Must do this. Don't run anything until you have rebooted.

Try it and let me know.
