I've just bought an Acer Aspire 7520 Gemstone

When the Laptop is at waist height on your lap or on a table top so your looking slighty down at and angle i have a white haze /sheen across the screen on black backgrounds that looks like light bleed but it doesn't change very much if i turn down the brightness , But if i lift the laptop up to chest height so i'm looking straight into the screen 90% of the white haze / sheen can no longer be seen and the screen looks perfectly black so it seems like it's an optical effect of the way the light is polarized at angles.

does it sound like a fault. ?

Sounds like either glare or the screen isn't adjusted to the best position for the bast viewing angle when its in your lap. I have noticed that on some laptops light leakage is more pronounced at angles.
