    Hi,

I've recently been given an Aspire 3630 to fix after a teenager potentially dished out some poor treatment to it.

It turns on but the Acer post screen is about half the size of the 15.4 display. It's displaying OK but only fills about 2/3 of the screen. This remains if you enter the BIOS.

The laptop doesn't boot to Windows as it's corrupt and I'll be reinstalling that soon but I'm concerned about the screen. Is this a regular occurence?

Is it possible that one of the Fn keys is responsible for adjusting the screen size?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    No, sorry..

Currently looking for what the cause of the problem might be..Maybe dead pixels..? Is what the LCD displays is a regular rectangle/square? Is the resized image in the center or it's just cut off from the top/bottom?

Please turn quiet boot OFF(ACER logo doesn't show up) and tell us if you see any errors during POST?

To start thanks for the quick reply.

I don't think it's dead pixels as the display is crystal clear. Basically the Acer logo starts in the top left but doesn't extend all the way to the right of the screen nor does it go all the way to the bottom. I can't turn off the quiet boot at the minute, battery flat and don't have the charger with me. When I went into the BIOS the screen size was the same.

An update...no errors reported upon boot up. After being switched off for some time it turned on perfectly with no screen issues. After a couple of reboots however it's reverted back to the minimized screen.

    Does this help diagnose things?

Well..kinda..hardware related for me, no doubt but it's hard to tell from where exactly the problem come for..did you move the notebook around? Maybe it's a cable..

It doesn't seem to be affected by moving around so I don't think it's a loose cable although I'll perhaps take it apart for a look.

It certainly didn't move from working to not working 5 mins ago, it was sat in the same place.

I agree it appears hardware related, is the graphics chip a plug in job or is it soldered to the board and thus a new motherboard is required?

You should open it and check it out..My Asus Z94L has a SiSM661MX on a AGP slot..it could be removed..but in ACER..no idea.

    You have the service guide?

i know very little about the aspire 3630,, if it's like the 3680 it's a beast to upgrade or work on

you'll need a service guide to do much of anything

I haven't got a picture as it's just gone back to it's owner.

I didn't upgrade the BIOS as I'm fairly certain it's hardware related however it's an option.

The latest is that when the laptops been swtiched off for a few minutes and then switched on it generally works. It then stays working no matter how long you leave it on. If however you shut it down after it's working and turn it back on chances are it will go funny. In a nutshell....it's works when cold but a warm boot is touch and go.
