Screen jitters when running on battery power. Any ideas what the problem could be?

My Acer Aspire 5600 has had a jittery screen for a few days now when running off battery power. Yesterday the screen went completely black on me (I rebooted and the screen went back to displaying but jittering). When I plug in the AC adapter the screen is fine. Any ideas what the problem could be? I recently put in a new hard drive and upgraded the RAM from 512mb to 2 gigs, running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

I just noticed that "Set video mode to OpenGL" is an option on my start menu (as if it's been recently accessed). Does that mean anything?
