    Hello folks!

I've got a problem with my Acer Aspire 4810 TZ (2,5 years old, out of warranty, Mint and Windows 7 OS)

    Here's what happened:
I turned on the computer, chose the OS, and then the screen got all weird (there were strange, colorful, shaky patterns). I turned the computer off and tried to turn it on again, but while it sounded like it was going to start up normally, the screen remained totally dead. I tried turning it off and on several times but to no avail. Additionally, the HDD indicator initially flashed, but then did not blink as it usually does when the computer is starting up. Also, sometimes I had to press the power button twice before the computer started turning on. The PowerSmart Key lights up normally.

    Thanks very much!

The screen problem could very well be a GPU problem. The patterns you see are artefacts and can be caused by overheating of the GPU. I think I am right in saying you have an IGP which is the Intel GMA 4500m HD.

So, if that's the case, it's soldered on to the motherboard. And motherboards for laptops cost almost the same amount as a new laptop anyway.

Have you thought about taking it to a repair shop (not acer obviously)?
