    Hey guys,

I actually have a Gateway EC1815U and heard it is identical to the acer 1810t.

In the Gateway bios (insyde) I see an option for a device on IDE1. IDE0 is used for the internal hard drive.

I am wondering if there is either

1- a way to expose the 2nd IDE externally to use like a eSATA device with it

    or

2 - Be able to install a 2nd IDE device like a SSD to use that interface

I'm wondering out loud and checking here to see if anyone can offer some advice.

    Thanks!

Your question doesn't make sense which is probably why your not getting any answers.

Do you know what IDE actually is, as from your question it doesn't seem that you do. Maybe wiki what IDE (PATA) is in relation to what SATA is and then rephrase.

If you go into the BIOS you will see an option for a second internal device and I was wondering if you could in fact have a second internal device?

Just because the BIOS or Device Manager show an option for it doesn't mean your motherboard is equipped to use it. My notebook also has secondary IDE and SATA channels, but only room for one hard drive and optical drive each.

    Hi elsewhere,

congrats on your new laptop. i believe there isn't more space in there for a second hdd.

However i have a question for you... Recently i went to a computer store and i as trying to decide between the Gateway EC1815U & the Acer 1810T.

So i was deciding to buy the Gateway however on close inspection of both the laptops side by side i found that the Acer Lcd was slightly brighter and more crisper than the Gateway Lcd.

    1. Did you feel the same...??

    2. Can u go down to a store with your laptop and compare the lcd quality with a Acer 1810T and let me know....? Coz i'm very confused and still haven't bought one of these because of this reason. The Acer 1810T is only offering 320gb hdd but the gateway is offering 500gb hdd but i'm confused about the lcd screen quality...?!?

Here's a link to my original post in this issue....

    Thanks...

I think he is talking about using one of these in his laptop. I know that I have a PCIe slot in my 7720 that is unused and I have often wondered if one of these ssd cards could be used in it. However, I have never seen anyone describe using one in an available slot and I don't want to spend the money on one without seeing proof that it works first.

First that pci-e connector has only usblines, second you cannot boot since in the bios it's not selectable, and a ssd just as storage is not a very good choice.

I agree with your point. I was just trying to figure out if that option was actually usable :)

FWIW, I found no difference between the gateway and the acer. I actually own the gateway because I prefer the larger drive and the color red :)

Also, I up'ed the memory to 8gb which I find very useful for running VMware ;)

Yes, you can put 8gb of RAM in these laptops :D

    hey man...

i recommend you compare the screens again....

i was also goin in for the red gateway.... for the red color & larger hdd...

but i clearly remember noticing the gateway screen to be faded and less crisp and also washed and weaker colors when i did a side by side comparison it with acer 1810...!!!

Did you did a side by side comparison before buying....???

This is a classic strategy used to sell expensive TV's in retail stores. They adjust the less expensive model or brand to give an inferior picture and then use this as a selling point for you to buy the one with better picture. Only true comparison - apples to apples - is to go into the settings and make both the same.....and then make your decision.
