So, I'm thinking of swapping out my AMD Sempron 3000+ with an AMD Turion ML-32 or ML-34 processor in my Acer Aspire 3000. They're both socket 754. Has anyone else done this upgrade without any problems? Essentially, I would have an Acer Aspire 5000 (minus a few other details) after the upgrade...I just want to make sure that no one has had any heating issues or anything like that.

In theory it should be possible, as both of the processors use the same socket, however, a BIOS check may need to be carried out. I'm not sure if the Turion was an option with that notebook, but if it was, then the cooling and motherboard should be okay with it. Just check that the BIOS supports the processor. Also, bear in mind, that a processor upgrade will void the warranty.

The upgrade will void the warranty if there is a protective sticker over the heatsink or for opening the case in general. Please note however, that if there is no sticker and you still wish to maintain your warranty you may be able to replace your default sempron processor and send it back to acer for other repairs.

I have seen users replace hard drives / optical drives / etc. and send the laptop or desktop back to the manufacturer for repairs (for other problems of course). Just to be sure, it does not mean that by defaut your warranty is voided, it all depends

The Turion was only on option on the 5000, not the 3000, but they appear to be the same notebook other than that. As far as the warranty goes, it's almost up, so I am not too worried about that. I just want a bit of a performance increase.

I wouldn't bother. I had a Compaq notebook with a Sempron (not the fastest one either), and I have an ACER with a Turion. Both are 1.8's. I really don't see any difference in overall speed or responsiveness. I would look at adding RAM instead if you want increased performance.

The most important thing is to check for voltage compatibility in a 3000 mobo for Turions. I don't know if your sempron is the exact same voltage than ML32-34 Turions. Also consider there are MT Turion versions with lower voltage settings.
A BIOS update should take care of that, but you better double check....just in case.
You don't want to fry your processor I guess...If it works, monitor CPU temperature while runing to check if the stock cooling solution is acceptable.

Yesterday (7 Feb 2007) I completed the upgrade of my Acer Aspire 3002.
So far I have: Upgraded the battery to an 8 cell unit.
Installed an 80 GB WD HD

How hard was the swap and did you have to mess with the bios?
