Hi,
I read already a lot of this laptop on this forum. I saw some users over here already upgraded there cpu, memory and hard disk.
So this is the situation.
I use this laptop for work: excel, word and internet. until 2009 i used this laptop also for football manager 2009 until i got some heating issues. Nowadays i want to relaunch my carreer in fm11![]()
So this is the plan:
1) I will follow the thread from ssx4life
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...de-thermal-compound-replacement-5672wlmi.html
Question here: do i need to use arctic silver 5? Is there something newer and better on the market or is as5 the still the best?
2) I will install 4 gig ram.
3) I will install a new hard disk
4) I will look for a new fan. I read it is difficult to find a fitting one? Is there a possibility to install a new "version". For me this is important because i think my fan is broken. When i run different processes at the same time, i always get some warnings.
5) Is it usefull to change the cpu? OR should i stick with only the hard disk and memory-upgrade?
Thanks!
PM. Sorry for my bad english

If your fan is working (as in spinning) and doesn't make weird noises- it's not broken. You can buy a new one but buy only a replacement fan for your notebook not for any other unit (I explained why here)
Fan is not controlled by Windows so the warnings you get are most likely a sign of software issues- maybe you should consider a fresh install/eRecovery.
You didn't mention your CPU so I can't answer this one. What CPU do you have now? -
Hi,
The CPU is an Intel core duo T2300
Problem is, i don't know if the fan is working. I always got te warning, and when i listen to my computer, i hear some noise but i'm not sure if it is the fan or the hard disk what i'm hearing. -
Yes that CPU is worth upgrading.
As for the fan you have to feel the airflow- when the notebook is under load you should feel the worm air being blown out the vents at the rear/side of the notebook. -
Keep in mind that none of the upgrades you've mentioned will upgrade your system's graphics power and gaming capabilities - the CPU is relied on a lot less than the GPU for gaming.
If that's the case, you might be better off putting all the money you'd be spending on the upgrades and just getting a new notebook. -
Graphics aren't that important because the only game i'm playing is football manager 2011. For graphics intensive games i still have my xbox360.
Problem is, i have been calculating a bit and when i want to upgrade my pc then i have to pay +/- 300 euro's so i don't know if it is worth it in my case. -
I'd avoid the Arctic Silver 5.
Its not the best TIM out there, is rather expensive for the performance, and is also conductive, so its kinda risky if its your first time doing a TIM replacement for the laptop.
You might wanna consider the Arctic Cooling MX series or other good TIMs that are non-conductive. -
Arctic Silver 5 is not electricaly conductice which is clearly stated on their website.
-
There's still metal/silver parts in it, so I'd rather play it safe.
Given its price/performance ratio as well, there are better TIMs out there. -
-
I personally use the Arctic Cooling MX series
Got MX-2 on my desktop and laptop, avoiding MX-3 since they're very hard to spread, and more recently, the MX-4 came out.
MX-2's performance already surpasses that of the AS5, and is cheaper as well if I remember right.
There are better TIMs out there for sure as well, but they're harder to find for me.
Google it up I guess, you might get lucky and find good TIMs you can get in your area, wherever you maybe. -

Actually the MX series of paste are both neither conductive or capactivie.
Nothing IIRC can actually increase the resistance. Only decrease it. A paste that is neither capacitive or conductive should have little to no effect even if you coated the card (apart from thermals ofc getting worse). -
It's impossible to decrease resistance by putting anything on an electrical/electronic element- the best case scenario is that it has no effect.
It's becoming an OT and I dont think I'm allowed do thing like that so I'm gonna leave it up to OP -

Wrong way round my friend.
If you put a conductor on a conducting tract you make that portion of it effectivly wider and lower the resistance, only by scraping away at the tract or by severing it and placing something to bridge it can you increase the resistance.
But yeah AS5 getting in the wrong place could kill your motherboard/cpu/gpu./ Getting MX paste everywhere is just messy. -
So the conclusion is that the MX is better then AS5?

Yes it is. MX-4 should be fairly cheap.
Should i upgrade my acer aspire 5672wlmi
