Boy when Acers have issues they don't fool around1

    Two acers...

First one, an Aspire 5520 from which I removed the Vista and replaced wiith XP Pro. Upon first boot I noticed the XP had loaded drivers for the web cam which has performed flawlessly ever since. Chalk one up for the phrase "ain't broke don't fix it!".

Second one, an Extense 5620Z brought to me by the friend of the owner with instructions to "fix it or trash it". Proceeded to remove pests (e.g. Privacy Protector), misbehaving anti-virus and other bits of junk. It was still a sluggish performer so I went looking for other things amiss. Found SP3 installed. Pulled that out along with IE7. Went to reboot and now it wouldn't shut down. Had to hard crash it to restart! Re-did drivers for audio, modem, chipset, and VGA and still no shutdown. Kept getting to the blue screen where it says "saving settings... - logging off... - windows is shutting down..." and there it would stay till I held the power button down to hard crash it. RRRRRRRR! Off I go a scroogling. Found a bunch of blah blah that didn't help till I came across a post started by Akumaz0r. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=210992 Therein was a reply by CharredPC where he suggests disabling the webcam in the device manager. Did that, reboot, BULLSEYE! That got it! Then straight over to add/remove programs, bang bang bye bye "Crystal Eye Web Driver". As the uninstall nears completion, the XP wizard has found new hardware and is loading built-in drivers for it. As I reach over to click "Finish" on the Crystal Eye uninstall a balloon tip appears announcing that my new hardware is installed and ready to use! Reboot, problem solved, WEEEEEE! Many thanks to CharredPC for that astute observation

Now, out of gratitude, you should at least rep the folks that helped solve your problem.

It's the right thing to do

    Costs you nothing

    Cheers,
    Theo
