I recently had some sort of OS problem with this computer (Aspire 300WLmi), and the tech support shop reinstalled Windows, but they did it from a standard Windows XP disc, not the Acer OEM version. I have had a few problems with hardware, such as the GPU, but now I tired to back up some videos to a DVD, and NTI CD maker is giving me ''illegal request'' every time I try to do so. I also get error code 1005.

The full model number is Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-833S.

I have tried upgrading the firmware to VRS3, and the standard windows disc burner doesn't work either. The drive can recognise discs and find out their capacities, but when a disc is inserted, when you look at my computer you get ''DVD Drive'' and the icon as though the drive is empty, as opposed to the blank disc icon.

I would suggest that you go into device manager and uninstall both the DVD burner and the secondary IDE channel, then reboot. Maybe something is not set up correctly and may clear when Windows redetects the hardware. You should not need any special drivers.

In my experience the Liteon burners are quite reliable, but the 833S must be a few years old and perhaps it is starting to have problems. Maybe you should consider replacing it with a new burner?

OK I followed your instructions and the same thing happened as before, it refuses to burn the disc.

I don't really want to replace the whole burner, it's not really worth it since I am going to get a new laptop sometimes in the near-ish future, but I would like to fix this one so I can get all my files off here.

Try some of the CD-burning software like Nero. They work for me.
