Ok I got home from work today. Was surfing the web when I started to smell smoke Looked and the vents were blowing out smoke and I could see a yellow light from it. I quickely unpluged it and blew into the vent. I bought the laptop from costco in june 08 and called their technical spport today and they concatced acer and said I'm out of warranty and don't care. This could have burned down my house!!!! is there anything I can do? What should I do. I dont have the money to replace it and need it for college. Thanks

    !!!!
Holy shift, what on earth could have done that?!
Maybe your fan burnt out or something?

It might be necessary to grab a netbook to use until the 6920G can be repaired.

It seems there should be someplace else at Acer to contact. They should be concerned not only about the bad publicity you can cause the Acer name, but also concerned about the cause of the fire and if it's endemic to something in certain product lines.

man thats bad luck for the laptop but lucky you was there. i have left mine on many times downloading over night.
have you regularly cleaned the vents of dust?
us fellow 6920G owners need to know what caused this.
does this mean you are taking the 'Big Grin' from your sig?

You might be better off going to Costco in person with your laptop. They have excellent return/replace customer complete satisfaction policies, and with the issue you have, might exchange the unit on the spot for a new model.

You might want to read the following link as well.
It is about an Acer recall due to only 3 reports of AS3xxx models catching fire.
I would guess you are not the only one with your model that had this problem.
    Report it.

RobsTV, the Aspire 3xx0 models are rather different in internals and design from the Aspire 6920G that we own (and are getting increasingly concerned about).
Call Acer anyway and let them know that this happened. They won't know if you won't tell them.

Ok I tried costco agian and they told me that acer is a pain when it comes to their products when its out of warranty they told me that most likely they wont do anything but my parents have offered to buy me a new computer. If I get a new computer and if my old acer laptops hardrive is not damaged is there anyway to get some of my data off the hardrive onto my new computer? Since all new computer have winodws 7 instaead of vista is this even possible? Thanks!

Forgot to add my new computer will most likely be a desktop since I never took my laptop anywhere is still possible to get data from my laptop hardrive to my desktop?

Get an external USB enclosure for the HDD and if it's not damaged, you should be able to recover it. I would open up the laptop and take photographs to see (if possible) the source of the problem.
