I think i have found the soure of the popping with playback, in the Audio settings in the sounds and audio properties (in control panel) the defult device for audio playback is the Realtek AC97 Audio, however Dxdiag says different, on the music tab it says the defult port is the microsoft synthesiser, and when you use the test direct music function to test the synthesiser is has the poping problem but when you test the Realtek AC97 Audio, the playback is perfect!

so have i got this all wrong in that the defult port seting has nothing to do with the problem or am i right, and if so is there a way to change it.

Hey Redfrog I have an Acer TravelMate with the same audio. Just roll back to an earlier driver and....Pops gone!
