I have an Aspire 5102, which I just bought recently. A few days ago, hibernation started going haywire, and I turned it off, as suggested by Amol. Now standby is acting up too. Originally, I had standby set up so that when I closed by lid, the comp would go into standby. After a while, when I closed my lid, the screen went blank, but the HD and wireless card would still be on. I couldn't bring the notebook back except to press the power button until the unit turned off. So I changed the settings so that when I closed my lid, the screen would go off, but the comp would stay on, and the unit would go into standby only when I pressed the power button. It worked fine once or twice, but now the same thing is happening again. The screen goes blank, but the HD and wireless would not turn off. I recently formatted to NTFS, so could that be the problem? Also, I realized that things started going bad after I installed the newest ATI drivers from Acer, which fixed system recognizing the wrong card (system said 200m when i had an xpress 1100). Could that also be the source of my problem? Thanks.

I am not sure if it's the display driver that is causing all this trouble - it's a possibility though. You can try installing Omega drivers (get it from www.omegadrivers.net) and install that. Make sure you uninstall your ATi Catalyst driver before you do so. Either uninstall it in windows or in safe mode( for some reason I always do it in safe mode). Just double click on the "ATi Software Uninstall Utility" in the Add/Remove program list found in the Control Panel.

Doing this may/may not cause your system to recognize your graphics chipset as a 200m or 1100.

Additonally, you could go here and download a utility which will tell you if Catalyst Mobility™ is compatible with your system. If it is, you can also try to get the latest Mobility drivers from www.ati.com
