    Hi all.

I have a Acer TravelMate 4650 notebook and cannot boot it up. Whenever I try to start it, all I get is a high pitched whine and the only way to stop it is to remove the battery and the mains.

Does anyone know what this noise is?

I had it working today then I turned it off - I cannot start it anymore.

    Anyones help is greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards
    Ota

phantom his problem appears to be outside of windows, in this case I'm guessing he has some sort of hardware failure. My best suggestion to you is to send it back to acer if it is still under warranty.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, let us know how it goes.

    Thanks guys for your advise.

It is now out of warranty and now looks like i'll need to recover the hard disk and buy a new laptop - it won't be an acer though!!

    Thanks again.

Verify your memory modules are well inserted, if there are 2 try one alone then the other... Seems like a hardware problem.

I think LeDuc is right with the harwdware problem.
If you have time, and you are a bit handy you could try to open the notebook an look for loose conections. In your case i guess it is related to the battery charger unit. Normaly it is a small extra unit and is pluged onto the mainboard.
I suggest you should try to find the service guide for your notebook first.
It also could be a short circuit somewhere. That high pitched noise normaly comes from some power regulator when they are failing. These power regulator are on the battery charger unit, too. Oh as i write this it also could be a bad battery - they sometimes go into short circuit mode!

    Thanks guys for your replies...

It does look as if it is one of the memory modules as since removing it I have not had any problems. The memory is still under warranty however the laptop is not!! Seems I bought it too long ago!! (just over 1 year old)

"When did I buy Acer?"...when they became cheap Joe :) Now I know why!!
