Are there steps to be taken before a factory restore - drivers etc?
(Beyond just backing up my data.)

    This is an Acer 4530.

    Yes, ok.
    IE was hardly used.
Firefox bookmarks will be backed up.
    No contacts set up

The D rive will be backed up, but most of it is a mirror of a desktop.
The laptop was used just to be able to do homework while traveling.
I just can't get MS Works and Office to uninstall completely. The MS KB article on removal of these was rather involved and some steps addressed non-existant items. I would love a full recovery and will hope for a normal uninstall

Unless someone thinks that won't work?

Yes there is one ..... Build one erecovery DVD disk , or better , i would advice to make two copy s .

If you have change the partition names with other than the original , or format them with other file system that the original , you have to undo them.

Many people complain that erecovery fails , but they have mess up their laptops before starting it , and then ... Yes it fails .. its normal to happen.

Good news...successful recovery. That took about an hour.

Then I took the laptop back to get one with a web cam as I should have had with this model of laptop. Walmart came through, I must congratulate them.

Now the laptop is fresh out of the box. I'm letting the battery charge before I start it.

Anything I can should do before I start it?

Is there a way of enlarging the C drive partition (reducing the D drive to say 30 GB instead of 70 GB) before the "initialization" occurs from the hidden partition?

all your info on the D: drive should have been safe.
if im doing a factory restore, thats where i but a full back up(on D drive), and its always safe :D
    ?
EDIT: you can enlarge the c drive in disk manager.

    OK.
    I'm closing this thread.
I learned quite a bit here; things I wish I knew when I first bought the laptop. Thanks to all for your help.
Its time to *byte* the bullet, and start the new laptop and repartition.

I'm not a Mod, but I thought it would help ask that the thread stop. I assume a mod will close it formally later.
