I bought an Acer Aspire 5742G this christmas, and I'm pretty satisfied apart from a few small problems. However, I recently discovered something that I consider a major issue.

When my Acer sleeps, and I later wish to turn it back on using the power button, as lifting the lid does not accomplish this in the normal fashion, my laptop simply fails to start. The light will come on the power button, and then then the system dies. I need to then power up and go through the the safe start up options menu.

This only happens when I'm using battery power. It's as if my laptop is trying to locate the AC power source, fails and then subsequently fails to locate the battery power source and dies.

It's very strange and concerning, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and what they did to fix this issue.

Probably not, I've not done that since I bought the PC. I wouldn't have a clue how to do it, and I wouldn't want to ruin my PC if I get it wrong. Any guides or tips?

It looks pretty straight forward enough on the Acer website http://www.acer.no/ac/no/NO/content/drivers , what are the chances I would ruin my PC?

Chances of an update going wrong are rather slim but it can happen.
General rule is to avoid BIOS updates unless you have problems (which is your case) or an update brings something important to the table.

Tips: battery inside the notebook and fully loaded, power cord connected, no USB devices connected, Wi-Fi disconnected, firewall & anti-virus disabled.
Launch the updater- confirm if needed and do not touch the computer at all until you will have seen login screen again.

I'm still having this problem after updating BIOS. It seemed to work at first, but it's been doing it again the last week.

    Any other suggestions?

Maybe Windows sleep is just unstable. I have been using PC for 2 decades and the sleep function has never been reliable with any Windows I have used. They are permanently turned off on all my PCs now. I let anything go standby but never sleep. Sorry for not much help.

I'll try that, too. It's strange though, it's only ever when it's using battery power.

I'm still occasionally having this problem, both from sleep mode and standby. I've tried the recommendations in this thread, but they seem to help temporarily.

    Anything else you can suggest?

I suspect the ACPI Implementation on the laptop is broken.
You need Acer to fix it with a BIOS update.
Many systems which have problems with S3 suspend and resume is usually caused by buggy ACPI DSDT implemented by OEMs.
Unfortunately not all OEMs are dedicated enough to fix it.
