Ok .. so I have an old ACER notebook with an AMD Athlon64 3500+ CPU and a GF 5700 Video Card integrated.

Everything was working just fine , I've just installed WindowsXP with a whole bunch of programs.

Then, as it happened, the power cable was jacked you of the notebook's connector. Nothing was damaged, just the notebook was suddenly shut off .. although the battery should have kept it working .

    Nevermind I've said.

Reconnected the cable and pressed power and all the strange things started to happen :

1)The notebook is taking more than 5 minutes to go beyond the POST screen ... it doesn't matter if it goes into the BIOS or the OS.

2)Even if it manages to get into windows .. everything works slow and whenever I try to access the ODD, I get errors.

3)If I disconnect the Optical Disk Drive (ODD) from the laptop. Physically take it out of it, everything works fine.

4)If I connect an EXTERNAL ODD through USB , the problems reappear .. even the slow POST and slow BIOS access and the inability to access the Optical Disk Drive (ODD) in windows.

    How is this even possible?

To have the same errors on an USB DVD as with the internal DVD ? Even in slow POST and BIOS ...

Its like my laptop doesn't like Optical Disk Drives anymore .. no matter how they are connected to it.

I think the clue is "the battery should have kept it working".

Maybe pulling the connector has damaged something physically and that is why the battery didn't take over. Pulling the power while in use could have corrupted files etc too.

Did it work on battery before ?

Did you try to restore BIOS setting to default when your ODD was not connected? After BIOS reset, boot to windows with ODD disconnected and check what will happen, then shut-down windows, reconnect ODD and boot and check will it work...
    May be it could help...

    Cheers

The notebook worked on battery before and work on battery now.

I've booted the notebook without the OD conected and updated the BIOS to the latest version available.

When the ODD is not connected , the notebook works ok.

But what has any of this anything to do with a DVD connected on USB ? :(

It shouldn't have anything to do with USB :(

I assume other USB devices work fine, don't they?

That's weird. Since there is no reset in the bios, perhaps remove all power as well as the backup battery on the motherboard for a few mins, then put back everything and try again. If that didn't work, perhaps something was fried on the motherboard.

It would really help if you specified the exact model of your notebook.

It is an ACER 1520 .

Removing the battery and the power cord was done.

The BIOS battery wasn't removed cause I never got around to open it up.
