I've been looking up all the things that run at startup on my Acer Aspire 5672, using msconfig. One of the startup items is called ALCMTR. On looking this up on lots of web sites I'm getting very confusing advice! Apparently it is an application from Realtek but some sites say it is evil spyware and should be removed immediately while others say it is harmless and should not be stopped from running unless it causes errors.
Can anyone advise on the truth of all these claims?
If it is reporting back to Realtek as some people claim then what is it reporting?
-
i have it running on my computer and it causes no problems for me. but i will try getting rid of it then rebooting and let you know if i have any problems.
-
Thanks, I'd be interested in the results.
I'd be even more interested if anyone knows what information it is supposed to be sending back to realtek - if it is then it is strange that it is not being picked up by my firewall.
If you try searching in google for ALCMTR you get lots of sites with, as I said before some very conflicting advice. -
there are no problems sthat i can see after telling it not to start at startup.

That is part of the realtek software for your soundcard, it does not need to run at startup unless you like their bloaty software.
-
But is there any alternative to the Realtek software if I want to use the inbuilt microphone and speakers, etc?
I'd like to know what ALCMTR is doing before I take it away - it might not matter now if I'm not using whatever it is for but could I need it in future? -
The realtek software is pretty much bloatware, you do not need it to run at startup in order for your sound, mic , etc. to work. It made me kinda mad to see I couldnt install the soun drivers without the software, but oh well. If you want to adjust settings you can either use windows sound settings. Or you can make a shortcut to the realtek program and only use it when you need it, thats what I do.
