I discovered that when windows is checking the battery power/status the mouse pointer (using touchpad) and usb ports pause/freeze for a split second on my TM 4000. I wonder if this affects other Acer laptops as well. If you'd like to check yours you can do the following:

    1. Download 'mobile meter', link is provided on this page:

    http://dssc3031.ece.cmu.edu/~tamaru/mobilemeter/mobilemeterreadme-e.htm

    2. Change the frequency of how often battery power is checked to about 2 seconds or less, then move the mouse pointer with touchpad around continuously and see if it freezes for a split second.

I was trying to use a usb soundcard which gave me audio dropout/pops/clicks which disappear when battery is removed or when I disable 'smart battery subsystem' in device manager.

looks like this can be fixed with a bios update, as referenced on this page:

anyone knows the best way for acer to take notice? I tried calling but the agent taking my call had no clue what I was talking about. Still waiting for an email reply.
