You can probably take a look at the pictures posted by Prozzerg for his Acer 4501WLMi. It looks exactly like the 3201, but wider.

Here's the links to Prozzerg's images of his 4501WLMi.
    http://bilder.prozzerg.com/index.php?album=2004-09-16+-+Laptop/
    http://bilder.prozzerg.com/index.php?album=2004-09-17/

You may want to consider the 4501WLMi. I know it's a bit larger & heavier than the 3201XCi, but it's only $1899.99CDN from www.NotebookOutlet.ca which is in Toronto. The HDD is smaller, 40GB 4200rpm, but you're probably gonna get a 7200rpm drive anyways (www.CanadaComputers.com is selling the Hitachi 7K60 60GB 7200rpm HDD for $255CDN). You get generally the exact same specs in a slightly larger/heavier frame for less. The savings you get here can be applied to all the upgrades (HDD & Ram & Bag/Case).

I've just got this notebook.. It's nice, but then I've got nothing to compare it against. My first notebook! I've got the odd pic of it, but don't know how/where to upload pictures to the web.

My only gripes so far is
-The fan randomly coming on an off, but if this is the case with ALL notebooks i'm completely fine with it.
-The mess in terms of software that is on the notebook when I first turned it on. Taskbar already so crowded!
-The lid not having a latch is a bit strange

PS-does anyone know what the difference between, hibernate, sleep, and standby modes are?

i am considering the 3201xci as well...

is $1429 from newegg a good price? the price on the website seems to be stuck at that level for awhile now...

i would also consider the vaio s170 w/ radeon9700 as well if not for the high sticker price.

is there another small laptop with radeon9700 gpu in it?

That newegg price is okay. Right now ebuyer has the lowest price. But I have seen for a few days a much lower price. Try pricegrabber or froogle...

I also looked at the sony s series. But the price is high. If you want a mac, I expect the new 12" powerbooks due out soon to have 9700 or better GPUs. I looked at the powerbook, but didn't want to switch to MacOS X (even though it's a better OS than XP).

I love my 3201XCi and have upgraded to the 7200 rpm hitachi drive and added 1 GB RAM to get me 1.25 GB total. It works great & I love it.

    Right, thanks again!
So Sleep mode is essentially what happens when I'm working on my notebook and then go off to make tea and have a chat, then return to find the notebook blank. I do actually have to press the power button to get back in and not just press a key or move the mouse like on my desktop.
And hibernation mode is just when I close the lid it powers a bit more off than in sleep mode? because it thinks I could be away a bit longer?
Still seems like they are almost the same thing!

I haven't actually played with this thing much yet, as I've been so busy. I wouldn't mind reformatting and starting from fresh, because it feels so messy already. However, Acer don't seem to have supplied a winxp pro cd! Is it included on the recovery CD? or if I run the recovery cd will it install everything as it was when I first opened the notebook?

    Chaiseylain,

Regarding the power management features, Sguart's link to Microsoft's site explains it all in full detail.

When you close your lid, by default, it goes into Standby mode which is similar to Sleep mode, but a bit deeper in the power management scale I believe.

Regarding the XP Pro CD's, I believe Acer only includes an Image of XP Pro to restore from. It's generally a copy of the HDD when you bought it. It's a lot faster to restore than using an XP CD and all the apps/configs are already set. The main thing that makes this a bad option is when you want to manually reload the OS from scratch. I think you may be out of luck on this specific issue. The only way to get around this is to buy another copy of XP Pro.

    Thanks again venombite.

Can I throw one other question into the mixer!?
My default resolution appears to be 1024x768, that is fine and good for my eyes, but I wouldn't mind going up a level to fit more on the screen. However, when I upped it to 1280x(i've forgotten) it wouldn't fit the desktop to the screen. I had to move my mouse to the edges to view the whole screen. Is this a BIOS setting? What do most people use on a 14.1 notebook screen?

The 3201XCi has a maximum resolution of 1024x768. External monitors can go higher, but that's all you'll get on your notebook.

Pushing the resolution above the max resolution would put the system into a Virtual Desktop mode. The resolution is 1280x1024, but you can only see 1024x768 pixels at a time. That's why you have to scroll around to get to the other end of the screen. You can't push the res higher than it's rated for, 10x7 is your limit.

If your school offers a discount on Acer's then you will be able to get the discount, otherwise no.

About the 4501WLMi... I contacted a few suppliers and they told me that it is discontinued... I felt really bad, cuz like Venombite said, it has everything the 3201Xci /w a little faster cpu and heavier/wider...

Can anyone confirm that they're not selling this in North America ?
