I bought the 8204 as an upgrade to the Ferrari 4005. The screen was about 25% dimmer than the ferrari screen and just like another owner, upon peeling off the "protective" film from the fascia overlying the power and shortcut buttons, a piece of the gloss finish peeled off as well! I think I'm going to return it and buy a Lenovo T60. I don't know why they would downgrade on the LCD!

That is the word on Acer screens, they are dimmer.

Yeah, but the Acer Ferrari 4005's screen is much brighter. Don't know why they would use dimmer settings on what should be the same LCD.

That was me with the protective film problem. I can't believe this happened to somebody else too. I thought it was just a strange fluke. I've sent mine back for a replacement and am waiting for a new one.

I strongly recommend calling Acer about this and sending it back. This is not just a fluke for one unlucky customer. It means that there are serious quality issues with the materials Acer uses to build their laptops. Granted, this is only a cosmetic issue, but you shouldn't have to accept any sort of damage on a NEW laptop!

What strikes me as ironic is that I could really care less about the shiny gloss finish. I think the laptop would've looked fine with just the matte finish of the regular plastic. But Acer decided to pretty up this laptop by coating the plastic with some sh**ty gloss. It's like those cars that have really bad window tinting with bubbles everywhere. Or those people who walk around with really REALLY white teeth ... they think they look better, but come-on, don't fool yourself.

Mine's perfectly fine. Its better than the HP, Toshiba, Alienware of my friends' so yeah I'm happy. At night its almost too bright and i see it fine even in sunlight. Return it if its messing up for you.

lots of 8204s have several problems. It's a bad design however there are a lot of lucky people who dont have problems with it.

Not all acer screens are dim. my 1694 is VERY bright
