I have a Acer Aspire 3680-2633. I've had it for about 3 months now and I have been monitoring the CPU temperatures with NHC and Speedfan. So..

On idle : it hovers around 60C
On load : it goes up to almost 74C

Now, I clean my vents every 2 weeks and have already tried putting a notebook cooler (Targus Chillpad) underneath, and also propped the back of the notebook on a thick book to provide more airflow underneath. I have also made sure to take away any clutter away from the notebook and it is sitting on a table. However, none of these methods seem to help my temperature problem seeing as that the temperatures stay the same. Any help would be appreciated.

    Specs:
    Intel Celeron M 520 1.6GHz
    2GB DDR2-667 Ram
    80GB 5400RPM HD [ WDC WD800BEVS-22RST0 ATA Device ]
    Intel GMA 950

It could be the targus chillpad are not meant for acer 3680, I could be wrong since i never seen a targus chillpad before.
does the fan blow into the airvent or suck the air out from the air vent.

I have two Fantom USB drives attached to my 9300. The 250G sits idle and is only used to store backup data. It is only on when I switch it on. The other runs on a fairly constant basis.

The Fantoms sit tall, not flat so I have both of them under the laptop. The unused one is beside the processor/fan and the other is at the far side. I use a remote keyboard & mouse so the lid on the laptop is closed and I use a remote monitor.

Doing it this way gives me comfort thanks to the remote keyboard & mouse and the drives and laptop are in a Pi configuration with the cool drive tower next to the vents. I'm running BOINC 24/7 and the top of the laptop is cool.

Granted this won't work outside of the home/office but it does work very nicely.

P.S. No cat hair here to plug up the vents & cooler...

And yes, I do like cats... :)

The chillpad sucks the air from the air vent @ the bottom of the notebook. It doesn't interfere with the vent at the side of the notebook.

This setup would probably work for me as well but I don't have all the equipment lol. What I'm looking for really is an answer to why I am idling at 60C with clean/unblocked vents.
