I downloaded it, but how does it work?
seems that when I choose ``backup only`` he complains ``The input file bios.wph cannot be found``.[?]

Gray, MANY thx!! [)] Very nice!

Ac€r-support is still not able to provide the vers. 2.70. [ :(!]

Very old driver/prog - versions on their ftp-servers... ok, there are other manufacturers support-pages, but old bios-versions.... [xx(]

For those who have an optical drive Hitachi-LG DaTa STorage model HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4080N (like me), it's possible to convert it in a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4080N using 0S35 firmware upgrade.

    THANX - THANX - THANX
    This forum made me happy.
    My ASPIRE 1804WSMi now
    1) uses UDMA 5
    2) has Dual Layer DVD RW
And all was Free - no money

You are better than poor Acer support - esp. Czech Acer Support.
    Thank You.

Do You know any info about new ASPIRE 1804WSMi_ACB?
    -There is any new Display:
    "17”TFT WXGA Acer CrystalBrite, ATI® Mobility™ Radeon™ X600 128 MB"

Does anybody have this new type ?

Time to change the title of this topic![8D]

I got the new crystalbryte with 128mb, it`s nice.
but the reflection of the screen is a little annoying, it`s like a mirror and reflects a lot with dark screens.

There is also a new aspire 1801 with tv-tuner.

    What to update?... so far
    - bios V2.7 http://users.skynet.be/fa529119/bios.back
    - GPU driver (omegadriver)http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php
    - dvd-driver http://webspace.zmail.pt/realm/4080N.0S35 (add .rar and extract)
    - I also downloaded a new driver for the synaptics touchpad. http://www.synaptics.com
    - ?any more?

Update soundcard driver from www.REALTEK.com.tw at
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
(I did it and it works fine!)

Maybe lastest www.INTEL.com Chipset i915p driver from
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=816
(I did not try it yet)

    ------------

Does not anybody have in A1800 new P4 CPU ?
    I mean P4 540J (EM64T included)
    or P4 640 (EM64T and 2M cache included)

I heard that these CPUs have lower power conspumtion than our 540...
I am thinking about upgrade to it for WIN64 using.
But I dont know If is possible to change Processor in this notebook??

Yes, it's possible to change Processor in this notebook but, to 6XX series i think that a BIOS update is necessary.
I have a feeling that Acer don't release one.

What benefits does bios 2.70 gives apart from returning DMA 5 (which 2.50 introduced, but 2.60 shagged)?

I found deepest look inside the Acer server :)
    for All notebooks:
    http://csd.acer.com.tw/SI/Download2.nsf/NotebookWeb?OpenView

and there is written in 1800 section:
    About 2.60
01). Fix Keyboard No Function of Keyin Password when S4 Resume
02). Update VBIOS for 128MB VRAM Issue

But about 2.70 nothning, because is not in list....

    --------

    I have question:
I will buy bigger memory - I can choose (2x)
    1GB 333MHz CAS 2.5
    or
    1GB 400 MHz CAS 3.
What is better ? (The price is equal.)
MB i915 has FSB 400 but can work on this speed with Memory modules ?
Did anybody really try it ?

Well the AS1804 have a Prescott core (LGA 775 socket, 800MHz FSB with 1024MB L2 cache, HT and D0 stepping.
This is neither a Northwood (533/800) or Dothan (400/533) core.

Could You please make any test Memory Benchmark to compare, plese ?
I am Thinking 400MHz is better, but I read warning about CAS 3. This "may" be more important than frequency....

    Please Run this program HWinfo32

My result of old memory is now:

Well... I tried the BIOS 2.70 update and guess what... It worked!

Thought I may get a crisped BIOS but all went well. Just checked with Sandra and it now shows the ATA Device running at UDMA 5 so the updated BIOS was good. The CD/DVD device is currently running in UDMA 2. As long as I don't get the S3 Resume bug from this BIOS I'll stick to it.

Only one question to ask, does anyone know how to disable the Power Management feature. It is supposed to be in the BIOS but there is no setting for it, can it be done any other way? I don't need to have this enabled at present...

    Hello @ll,

Acer Aspire 1801 WSMI and the same BIOS jokes as descriped here in this thread.

    BIOS 2.40 (delivery): UDMA2!
    BIOS 2.50: UDMA5
    BIOS 2.60: UDMA2!
BIOS 2.70: UDMA5 (a very big thanks for spreading this BIOS 2.70 in this thread. Really great work).

Meanwhile I've stressed ACERs support team with some hard words an a direkt link to this thread. I don't get an answer to my last mail until today. Ohh wonder ... a message from ACERs support. And ... wonder two: a new BIOS version 2.90 attched. Should work great they pronounce. I'will test it today and repeat here again after this. ;)

Indeed a new version came out today.[8D]

    release note.
ECQ60 supports HDD UDMA5 mode at BIOS V2.70, but BIOS V2.80 is not.
BIOS V2.90 add Broadcom 5788 LAN chip workaround and fixed HDD kept UDMA2 issue.???????????

Does this mean V2.8 was again on udma2? seems that only the uneven bios versions work[)][xx(]

Upgraded the BIOS - second day in a row - to 2.90 and again good news. UDMA5 and everything running sweet.

Also upgraded the memory to 1.2GIG and noticed a nice overall improvement across the system... [ :D]

    (Use WinFlash version)

    And what does mean:
"Also upgraded the memory to 1.2GIG..." ????
I ihink is possible change memory to 512, 1024 or 2048 MB RAM.

    Hi @ll,

yes, Intel 915p chipset driver 7.0.0.1019 will run without any problem ... but I can't see any new function or bug reduction. ;) The performace test runs will be done with this driver. The grafics driver I use is the newest ATI OMEGA driver.

I've asked the every day man's support of ACER ... no other. ;) So ... you can ask them too. ;)

What is the last little partition ? Is it something for SLEEP MODE save?
Will I need it make to my new HDD too ?

    Thanks for answer.

    I'll suggest instead an Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100GB 7200RPM.

The third partition is related to the Arcade OS.

Just format, install the OS you want and at the end boot with Instant-on Arcade CD.
All the process of creating the partition and instalation of Arcade OS is fully automatic.

    Thanx for quick answer.

About 7K100 HDD - it is not possible to buy it here (in Czech Republic) yet.
I am happy that Momentus 7200rmp already is.
It is New and is in shop just one week....

    Is Hitachi faster ?
I think It has 8MB Cache too and I dont see any difference.

I think that both hard drives are very similar.
You should consider put the question in other terms: which hard drives are less power-hungry and more reliable? Regarding to this question, i would say Hitachi is the best choice.

Here's a problem that was not in any of the previous posts.
Has anyone tried to use a pcmcia card on a 1800 laptop?
Whenever I did so, I got a blue screen of death, or (best case scenario) I got the message "The device could not start" in the device manager along with a yellow question mark.
The problem was solved initially with bios 2.60, but then the hdd reverted to udma 2 mode.
With bios 2.90 I got the pcmcia slot working plus udma 5 mode on my hdd.
Note that there was a manual resource configuration involved in the device manager, the bios upgrade was not enough on its own.
Also note that I bought the laptop around last year's end and I got to solve the problem about 2 days ago, which means that I am not very fond of the experience...
I never got to understand what sp/dif support means, let alone to get work.
    Any ideas about that?
