Regarding the PCMIA problem (@ George), I never experienced it myself. I'm running on bios 2.5 and it's going well.

I do experience a startup problem, that after the bootup initialisation screen, the system hangs (before the Windows loading screen shows up). I can get it working again by starting it up with batteries only. I suspect that it is an overheating problem, but not entirely convinced yet, since the first time it happened, I couldn't startup (with AC) after having it switched off for an hour. As mentioned above, I'm running bios 2.50, 1804 wsmi and the only expansion is an PCMCIA CF-card reader.

Anyway else who has experienced (or is experiencing) this?

Note sure if this has been answered later on in the thread, but you probably have the mic set to on, which intercepts the sound of the keyboard. This happened to me with the travelmate 800 and it took a while before I realized it ;)

    Hi,

I've had my 1802 for a little while now and i seem to have developed a little problem.

The machine is powering it's self off in the middle of my using it.

I'm assuming this is some kind of over-heating problem , as after it powers off then it can be a little tricky to start up unless i leave it for a while. The fans do seem to be working and the machine doesn't seem particularly hot. Could it be the external PSU overheating ?

I can't see anyway to adjust the thermal cut ouot that appears in some BIOSs of other machines i've owned in the past.

    Can anyone recommend:

    - a good utility for monitoring / logging heat probes
    - other ways to keep the machine cool (replacing fans, thermal compounds etc)

    Has anyone had similar problems?

    thanks

    Hi,

for those of you that have updgraded your disks...

did you just start from scratch, ie install new disk, load OS and then reload apps

    or

did you use some kind of diskcloning technology, such as ghost?

I want to get a replacement harddrive as i'm down to 6gb free!! but don't want to reload all my apps, and i have a ton of mp3's in itunes.

could I get a couple of convertors to connect the two laptop drives to the spare ide interfaces on my desktop pc and use some kind of cloning software to replicate the disks?

    has anyone tried this?

    thanks

Hi to all...first time poster here, I have a big big problem with my 1802 not powering up anymore...sigh :(

I read the whole 21 pages searching for a solution.....but found none with my problem.

When I press the power up button psu provide voltage, fans begin spinning, then after a while (2-3 seconds) fans stop, power led stays on green, but the lcd stays blank (nothing appears), hd not spinning, and notebook does not boot (tried ext monitor, but does not pick up any signal, and hd anyway does not spin......so I believe it's not the lcd  ).

I've totally disassembled my 1802 (mainboard, lcd, etc..)
.....so I can do any test you want

    Thanks for your help!

    Enz

PS Should I have opened a new post, instead of posting here?

Solved.....cpu was not working....strange as were no traces of high temperature that could have damaged it...from now I'll always put my 1802 with the rearside raised 10-15cm from my desktop.....

No, there hasn't been an answer yet.
That is a fresh idea, which brings up another problem:
How do I turn the on board mic off.
I've tried everything but to no avail.
Any clue as to how to turn off the mic will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks improwise.

I don't know about the cloning procedure.
What I do know is that a 2,5 to 3,5 converter exists.
I bought one as an accessory along with a USB to IDE converter (which is an enclosure substitute).
    Anyway, good luck to you.

    I have this problem:
When I play music on full volume, so body of notebook make noises. There are any bad resonances. Does anybody knows what is source of it ? Where is problem ?....
I depends no on high volume, but on specific low frekvencies of played music.
For example - melody of starting MS Windows XP is problem making sound.

Sounds like you're having a problem with the speakers themselves - no laptop has that good of speakers, Acer's are no exception. They aren't able to produce the best sound - do you hear what you want whe you have the speakers at half-volume though?

You might try reinstalling the sound drivers - check for udpdated ones on Acer's site.

I was in service and when we open the case so sound was perfect.
    So speakers are OK.
The distortion come from uper cover (place with touchpad). But we can not locate it!
    We did remove
    -Card reader
    -DVD ROM
    -Arcade front panel with clock
    and problem is still there....

When (on removed cover) I make knock to area near touchpad (more left), so it makes resonance sound. There must be any free plastic or metal part....

NuClear check out the rest of the thread.
I have mentioned the problem you are refering to earlier.
The vibration of the keyboard is a fact.
    You can not overcome it.
I would say that it is not volume dependent entirely.
I think that it is also a matter of frequency.
Add to that that the mic is always on which makes it easier to resonate.
So problem is the keyboard itself.
The only countermeasure I could come up with was put a towel ontop of the keyboard and securing it firmly with flat heavy objects. That of course, can only be of help when watching a movie.
    Good luck.

I was an happy owner of an 1804WSMI. I got it some six months ago. Everything was working fine then, one day, it started behaving strangely. It doesn't shutdown nor reboot properly. It just stays there on the "Windows is shutting down" for quite some time, 45 minutes, more or less the battery total life (which means, the screen stays on until the battery runs out...). The only way to get the system started again is to take out the battery itself, take the AC plug out, leave it be for a few minutes. This way the internal battery resets and so do the bios settings.
    But. There's always one....
Sometimes this procedure doesn't work on first try. At one time i'm able to get to the login screen before the system freezes. Sometimes the primary bios loads and the vga one doesn't, you get the idea. And everytime i get to load the OS, it just takes AGES compared to the few seconds it required before. This is driving me crazy. I basically run only on AC and due to the work i do i got to reboot very often.
It can't go on like this. Any help could be appreciated.

    Stats follow:

Bios Version: v 2.90 (had 2.70, problem started, upgraded to 2.90, nothing changed)
Intel 915P Chipset (latest drivers from ATI, could try the Intel ones)
    1 GB Dual-Channel DDR
x600 128MB PCI-e with OmegaDrivers 2.6.83 (2.6.87 are known not to work properly)
ST9100823A 100 GB Hard Drive (in correct Mode)
HL-DT ST DVDRAM GMA-4080N (latest firmware)
WiFi and Blueetooth with latest drivers from ATI

note: Same results with my FreeBSD and Kubuntu installations.

    To Spire:
Thank You - It really works.

    To George:
The keyboard is not the problem!
I was with my notebook in service (for other reason) and when was opened,
I tried check source of sound.
Problem is part with touchpad and mic (next to keyboard).
The keyboard was removed this time and problem was still!
The exactly possition of buzz sound I can not locate. It was really impossible.
I tried to knock and it resonate - full part!

I was reinstaling my notebook and it writtes me:
    "Please insert Recovery disk!"

I inserted it and it writtes:
    "Missing file: Z:\IMAGES\60OA1800.ACR"

    I have only these CDs:
    ASPIRE 1800 Systém CD
    ASPIRE 1800 XP Home 1
    ASPIRE 1800 XP Home 2
    ASPIRE 1800 Instant on Arcade.

Could You search inside installation discs and tell me on which CD this file is, please? I did not find it anywhere....

    Thank You.

My poweradapter has gone dead yesterday, well actually it was the transfo who vibrated to much and component(s)? came loose...so if I shaked it a bit, it worked again (for about 10min...)
Normally Its not so hard to repair... but acer putted some nice silicone all over the place

So had to buy a new one...

But I`m still not regretting my purchase, notebook just works fine.

i think there may be an updated driver for this on acer's website, i cant remember who produces the card reader but there was a similar problem with aspire 3000's not recognising an SD card over a particular size.
