Acer's site does not list them. I was hoping they would be available by now.

So far a few with i3s have shown up in Amazon, but no sight of models with the i5.

Are Aspire models good for extended periods of time? Like 7 hours.

Here's a screencap of 5740 models from Acer's Canadian price list.
And here's Acer Canada's page for it!

You can preorder the AS5740G-6979 i5 from J&R with free shipping and no tax except NY for 750. Bing cashback(5%) brings it to $712.5.

Now if they would only release it already.

Methinks this is going to be quite the little budget powerhouse.
Second coming of the 5920G, mayhaps?

I hope they don't get to hot.

I just wish there were more models with the Core i5.

These are expected to be physically available somewhere around second week of February in Europe, so I assume it's similar for the US and Canada.

5740G with Ati Mobility Radeon 5650 is already for sale in Europe. Here are some interesting things:

    Resolution: 1280x768 (default)

    That's with an Intel i3 330M and a GPU Overclock (650/800, which makes it a 5730).

This is taken from a spanish forum.

Not a bad score for such an inexpensive machine. It's good to know it overclocks with no problems too.
Just for reference Asus notebook with core i5- 430 and HD 5730 scores around 7900 @1290x768 (as reported by OC-Freak on Asus sub-forum)

I don't know, just a little surprised that one CPU architecture and a GPU generation or two makes that big of a difference. Ah well.

To be fair, the 9500 was a midrange GPU as it stood (and not a great one), the 5650/70 are also a slightly higher series in the lineup than yours was (would be more comparable to the 96 laptop series).

A closer comparison would the the 55 series when they appear, and I wouldnt expect them to be so far ahead :)

Can you describe the quality display? Matte or Glossy?

That I know, Acer's CineCrystal is the glossy display specification. TehSuigi's post does not list them as such ( http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/5971/chaser.png). What do you think of it?

It's definately glossy. The reflections are dependent on the surrounding light sources and what your looking at on the screen but reflections are definately present.

To me, the keyboard feels to flimsy and cheap. The overall quality wasn't bad at all. Case, screen, it was all pretty decent for the price. But the keyboard was quite disappointing to me, unfortunatly. So I didn't buy it.

@alibabba Is it possible to confirm the mxm type of 5650 mobility? I wonder if it is mxm2.1 than I can find a 5650 for my acer 5920g or 6930g?

That's the thing with the Intel GMA HDs - it's totally doable, and Acer's released models with hybrid graphics before (Aspire 7535, iirc).
If they do have switchable, the 5740Gs just got that much more desirable, especially over the i7Q-equipped 5940G.

Go with Acer 5740G. It's available where I live and it's well priced so quite a few people bought one. No problems with cooling system reported, what's more GPU has a lot of room to overclock and still doesn't get hot.
No real reviews that I've seen but no one complains about this laptop.

I bought this laptop here in the UK 2 weeks ago.

Very happy with it so far.

Went for the i5-430 with Ati 5470gpu. 4gb of ram and 500gb hdd.

Build quality is good, i quite like the keyboard, doesnt feel flimsy to me. screen is really good, nice and clear.
Only thing missing from my model is bluetooth but thats no great hardship.

Only tested one game so far and that was COD: World at War. Running on high settings at default resoultion, very smooth and no overheating problems.

Received the 5740G-6395 in the mail today!

So far, it's a pretty sweet machine. Build quality is pretty good, size is nice, and overall pretty fast of a machine so far. Spent some time formatting it to remove the bloatware.

Unfortunately I'll be busy the next few days or I'd go more in depth into reviewing it.

Here's a shot of it at default:

Also, what program's can overclock the Mobility Radeon?

Alright I lied, I went ahead and ran one test. I'll need to re-run this on an external monitor + PCMark Vantage + 3dMark Vantage.

Here it is bone stock... default clocks on everything. 3dMark06 at 1280x768 (default)

Pretty good bang for the buck. Now what can I use to OC the video card?

Use AMD GPU Clock Tool. It also has a tab that shows temperature sensors, so if you don't mind reporting that too.
You can skip anything below 650MHz core and 800MHz memory as all cards so far achieved this with no problems (meaning you get stock 5730)
The 5650 in this particular model seems to achieve its limits somewhere between 670MHz and 700MHz for core.
There is one interesting thing you could possibly test- from what I've seen it pays off to overclock memory more than the core- which would mean the card is limited by memory bandwidth.
This affect is apparent in 3D Mark06 but could you test it in other benchmarks or games?

It depends on price. Y560 has ATI HD5730 and eSATA- making it better than Aspire 5740.
That said- Y560 is supposed to be priced from $850 up and it's possible that $850 is for i3 version with intel integrated graphics (unless HD5730/intel means switchable). That would make Y560 far more expensive than Acer- it would be a better laptop but I'm not sure if worth the money.

Alright so I've played around with this unit now a little bit. Received the AS5740G-6395 last night from Newegg. After re-formatting the PC to remove the bloatware, I ran a few performance tests on it.

The overall build quality of this unit is very good. Very solid, nothing flimsy.

Temperatures on it have been good too - the CPU and GPU do not go above 68 degrees C under benchmarks. Very quiet as well. Lots of usable ports as well, and the battery life so far looks good.

Speakers are very loud. The only annoying thing is that when you plug/unplug the AC adapter, there's a system beep that's really loud that I haven't figured out how to turn off/change yet.

    Here's a few pics:

And now benchmarks. Unfortunately, I do not have time to install games and do benchmarks on those, so I just stuck with the synthetics. Also note that I hooked up the notebook to a external monitor to run higher resolution stuff, since default 1280x1024 is impossible on the 1366 x 768 monitor.

    3dMark06 - Default Clocks (550/750) - 1280 x 768 resolution - 7260 points
    [IMG]

    3dMark06 - Default settings: 1280 x 1024 resolution - 6272 points
    [IMG]

    3dMarkVantage - Default settings for Performance - P3323
    [IMG]

    PCMarkVantage - Default - 6090 points
    [IMG]

Now to test GPU overclocking. First up, we try adjusting the core.

    3dMark06 - 1280x1024 - 605 Mhz core (10% overclock) - 6767 marks
    [IMG]

    3dMark06 - 1280x1024 - 825 MHz mem (10% overclock) - 6871 marks
    [IMG]

So it appears that the card is indeed memory bandwidth limited, as 10% overclocks in core and mem produced slightly more points for memory overclocking.

    Now for overall overclocking.

    3dMark06 - 1280 x 768 - 600 core, 800 mem - 7954 marks
    [IMG]

    3dMark06 - 1280 x 1024 - 650 core, 850 mem - 7356 marks
    [IMG]

    3dMarkVantage - Performance - 650 core, 850 mem - P3831
    [IMG]

I should have benched it again at 650/800 at 3dMark06 default settings for the computer, which is 1280 x 768. No doubt I would have easily passed the 8000 3dMark06 score. I love the fact that the Mobility 5650 can reach Mobility 5730 speeds pretty easily as well.

Needless to say, price/performance, this notebook rocks. Overall great quality, temperatures, sound, and overall performance.

It does take a little bit to get used to, especially since there's a numeric keypad there, but honestly after just a few minutes, I've gotten used to it pretty well. The extra room on the right doubles as an arm rest and is pretty comfortable.
