It's a relatively new model and I haven't heard much about it from anyone else. Which is why I'm asking anyone with one to step up and share whatever experiences they have with the 5680. I snatched one up at a local computer shop for $1450 (tax included).

Coming from a three year-old HP Pavilion ze5460 saddled with a desktop processor (2.5Ghz Pentium 4 [Northwood], not even a "Mobile" one) and integrated graphics (ATI Radeon IGP 345M), the Acer's 1.66Ghz C2D and GeForce Go7600 feels like a breath of fresh air. Build quality's iffy in some areas -- too much chassis flex for my tastes and the keyboard feels a bit junky -- but overall it's good value for the specs it came with (120GB 5400rpm HDD and 2GB DDR2 SoDIMM SDRAM).

Question: Is it just me, or have the vast majority of machines under $1500 being sold in big-box stores been saddled with Turions and Turion 64 X2s? I always thought Intel had a leg up when it came to laptop processors ever since the first Centrinos. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

For anyone looking, I posted a mini review of the 5680-6123 at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=94129

Since then, I've had the laptop for a couple of months and I'm pretty happy with it. Sure, its got a couple of shortcomings, but overall I have no regrets.

Now that Acer posted some drivers, I'm looking at testing Vista on it this weekend. I'll post my findings later.

I'm hoping NHC comes out with an nice update for C2D so that I can try undervolting and maybe control the fan speeds a bit better.

In the meantime, if anyone has any questions about the hardware, feel free to ask. Don't bother asking about the software, as I deleted the OS on day 2 and installed Win2K3.

Hi, I'm having a difficult time in choosing a laptop for myself. I am contemplating of purchasing Acer 5680-6123 notebook. I haven't been able to find any benchmarks or solid reviews on the acer. According to the specs, it seems like a real performer. One of the things I am concerned about this laptop is the build quality. Although the price of this laptop is reasonable its still a lot money to fork out therefore, I do intend to keep whatever laptop I buy for awhile. Having said that, I've also looked at purchasing an 14.1" Asus Aj8s because Asus is known to have good quality laptops. I am more concerned with peformance of the laptop than I am with the size of it; therefore, I would appreciate any advice any one has for me concerning any of these 2 laptops.

desiGQ, what exactly do you need to know about the 5680? As for build quality, I've seen many horrible opinions of Acers in this forum, but lets be realistic, unless you plan on dropping your laptop down the stairs, I'd say the Acer build quality will do just fine.

The C2D is faaast, GPU overclocks like a champ, it gets a bit warm, but not to the point where it gets uncomfortable. I've read the 5670s have some touchpad heat issues, well, the 5680 feels just fine.
