It appears Acer is gearing up for sales of the core i7 Aspire 8940G.
The following link has recently posted to the U.S. Acer site, and though unclear, judging from the technical specifications, it appears there will be at least three models available:

It is refreshing to see another entry in this class of core i7 notebook, and no doubt, this model will be competitive with Toshiba's Qosmio X500 series. Personally, I prefer Acer build quality over Toshiba, but admittedly..... the Qosmio X505-Q850 has a slight edge with me (for now), with it's inclusion of an SSD. One can only hope that Acer will consider introducing SSD technology to it's Aspire 8940G line.

ENJOY!

You can always throw an SSD in there mate and which is better, it would be the one you like, and not the one that Toshiba likes
-
Do you think we're likely to get an updated 6930 soon?
-
Or cpu, or gpu I see there is no boundry , nothing seems impossibible friend
But as u say changing hdd or ssd seems to be the 2nd easiest upgrade after ram upgrade. I also 1st upgraded my ram, then hdd, then cpu at last gpu on my 5920g.
-
love the LED-backlit TFT LCD
its also edge to edge so wiping the screen is so much easier.
my only complaint is the hinge and the media control - very fugly. -
I agree, IMO, it is uglier than the previous 8930G, that is one of my most favorite notebook designs, very sexy.

Agreed! I too enjoyed the look of my 8930G. No doubt, Acer has chosen to adopt the look of the 8935G for the 8940G. Hopefully, they have improved on the hinge design, and perhaps have improved other design features.

IT'S OUT!
Available at NewEgg!

-
It's been available there for about a week now.
-
Why can anyone of them release an i7with 15" or smaller..dang this thing will be heavy!
-
There are i7 notebooks with 15.4" through 15.6" screens.
-
Not from Acer yet.
-
Have you met the new Aspire 5940G?
I'm sure the two of you will get along just fine. -
Oh hmm compariable to Inspiron 15 w/i7 Core. I think Inspiron is better in a sense you can get a better LED option.
-
Just to be clear, the 8940 listed on NewEgg does have the ability to add a 2nd hard drive correct?
Would there be any issues with the 2nd hard drive added being 7200 rpm where the included one is 5400 rpm?
I read the 8942 will be released with a "better" graphics card than the 8940.
I personally do not play games on laptops and use them mainly for HD video editing. Any reason I should wait for the 8942 over the 8940?
I like the idea of a second drive where I could read from one and write to the other during video editing. This, coupled with the core i7 should be a noticeable difference in video render times I would imagine.
I currently have an Acer 6920G 2.5Ghz and was thinking about upgrading to this.
Thank You. -

Adding a second drive is no problem, as the 8940 does have two H-D drive bays. The release of this Acer model is new here in the U.S., and judging from the 'Technical Specifications' (click here, then click on the 'Tech Specs' tab), I anticipate upcoming models soon with dual drive configurations.
I think both the 8940 & 8942 should be up to the task for 'HD video editing'..... however, due to the ATI Mobility HD5650, the 8942 will have the advantage. Should you wait? Well, this would seem to be a matter of your patience. The 8940 is available NOW, and is nicely priced. No telling how long your wait will be for the 8942, and surely at a higher price point. The only thing I have read on the 8942 is this article, and no real clues to it's release date, only suggesting the end of the year. This would be nice, and is vaguely possible..... but if I had to guess, I'd predict late Q1, to late Q2 of 2010.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Details Emerge
I hope this helps!
-
Yeah but it has just an average video card built in.
-
Can anyone at this moment tell me the performance difference between the:
8935 GPU: (Mobility Radeon HD 4670)
8940 GPU: (GeForce GTS 250M)
8942 GPU: (Mobility Radeon HD 5650)
I mean I understand that they are progressively better, but how much so... what kind of difference will I see if playing a game like Oblivion or such?
Also does anyone know if either of these cards make it possible for users to upgrade to their more high end version with relatively few issues?
Thanks.

what a huge price difference from Newegg to the retailers down in australia.
it close double the price after conversion. -
what is the total Nits of this laptop??

Does anybody know of a decent review/unboxing of one of these? It seems like a solid competitor to the Toshiba X505-Q850 that I was about to settle on, but there are some differences that make me pause (DDR3 vs. DDR5 for the video card, 5400 vs. 7200 rpm HDD, weaker battery - lack of Blu-Ray and SSD aren't big concerns for me), and I was hoping that a solid review might give me a heads-up on any design flaws to take into account.

I ended up buying the Acer, though the differences between them were slim - the Acer had the higher res LCD panel and a slower/larger hard drive.
Do you have any specific questions about the Acer that I could answer?

What are you general thoughts on it? I am thinking of picking this up as a second notebook (and will be my main desktop replacement).
How is the heat on top, weight, screen res (I am concerned that 1080 will make everything too small for my aging eyes to see LOL ) -
as the owner of the 8920G with same res screen.
I set the DPI up a notch or use large font set. -
I had that resolution concern as well, but don't forget it's a whopping 18.4 inch screen. Even with 1920x1080, the screen fonts/icons are good. I only had Win7 booted for a few hours before installing Ubuntu, but I seem to recall that the fonts and icon sizes were fine, no squinting to see anything on the screen.
Weight does take some getting used to. I basically planned on the unit being a desktop replacement, so I had no expectations to lug it around town. I have a Lenovo T61 from work to compare against and the weight/size difference is significant between the both of them.
I haven't experienced any issues with heat so far.

Thank you.
I plan to use it as a desktop replacement as well. I am currently using an Acer 5670. It works well but is aging a bit and it does get warm to very warm at times in the palm rest area.
I will miss the slot load drive though. -
You guys know if the 4GB DDR3 1066MHz memory can be bumped to 1333MHz modules? Should be since the Core i7 720QM is 1333MHz FSB.
-
Does anyone know if this Laptop is going to hit the shores of the UK anytime soon?
Just it has just about everything I'm looking for, and the new Dell Studio 17.3" has a delivery date well into next year! I kinda need a new laptop before then! This Acer ticks every box -

Sorry bro, thats not the way as you think(and as I used to think) it depends on the bios and if it is acer be sure it does not support 1333Mhz modules. I tried on santa rosa platform to change ddr2 667 mhz to ddr2 800 mhz. As u see T7600 was 800Mhz Fsb but ddr2 800mhz rams worked at 667mhz speed only I gained lesser latency cas 5 to cas 4. Was it worth, I say yes for me gain is gain but I did not get what I intended. But if you have luck maybe Acer has bios update for 1333Mhz ram modules. By the way I heard good news from Acer 5942 and 8942 models have mobility hd 5650 on them.
