A little off topic, but for folks wanting to fool around with a Solid State Drive,
Amazon has Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Solid State Drive
for $75.56 with free US shipping.

Supports Trim, but takes a special effort to do so.
    Link to deal at SD.

I just found out either of the 2 bt mice I use (logitech v470 and dell 5 button travel mouse) start jumping all over the place if I try to be on my pc and stream media to my ps3 at the same time. For now I'm back to my v450 nano until I can get the anywhere mx.

There's a thread about ASUS backlit keyboard mod, so I guess You'll have to take the 3820 apart to see what Your options are...welcome among the waiting staff. :)

Is backlit keyboard really a dealbreaker for You? I've been waiting for the 3820 to replace my Vostro 1310, though really wanted a replacement with intergrated ODD and backlit keyboard.
Along the wait I realized I don't really need the integrated ODD, then my Vostro died, I currently use a Latitude E6500 (with backlit keyboard), and it makes me realize one can do without a backlit keyboard (though I agree it's nice to have it in general, You might get good use of it sometimes).

I'm interested in the 3820 but surely the point of these machines is a trade-off between performance and battery-life/heat and noise?

I don't mind a slightly reduced performance for cool, quiet and long battery life. My 3810T (with the 3500 core solo) is not quite powerful enough and painfully slow in some respects. I'd prefer integrated 3G WWAN and bluetooth.

My daughter has a Toshiba Satellite 500-XC1 with i3 CPU which works fine, if the timelinex had a low-power version of that it would be excellent. Cost is a factor as well otherwise I might as well just go out and get a Macbook pro!

I would expect to see more laptops incorporating low power versions of the Icores as soon as the first wave of new machines are out. I think you will see UL I5's and I7s with Ion 2 GPUs as well as others from ATI.

More than cost separates these new Icore machines from the MAC. The MAC's specs were anemic even for a last generation device. They have been left in the dust by the new gen Icores. I don't think they will be competitive with the new batch of Icore devices even after a refresh. Too much focus on the IPAD.

Not VIP - Bond ... James Bond. Actually, I have always used an aluminum briefcase for work. Mine is all beat up and dented but still protects everything inside. No limoz for me.

I realize these German links don't give us a solid sense of when the 3820TG will show up in the U.S., but on one site they do have an ambiguous release date of 5-6 weeks.

    http://translate.google.com/transla...arch?q=acer+3820tg&hl=en&sa=X&tbo=1&tbs=qdr:d

Let's keep hoping for solid info soon from Acer!

A link from China. These may not be the exact models being released to the U.S. but they have some clearer pictures in this review than I've seen elsewhere.

Palm rest looks metal but what is that shiny ugly plastic surrounding the keyboard? To be honest I don't even think 3820 will be available with 5650 in less than 2 months (if they put it in 3820)

What's with the low specs on the 3820TG? 2 GB Ram, 512 Mb video RAM, 500 Gb HD, and Core i3? How does the Core i3 compare to the SU7200 in the UL30VT?

I still think they will come in lower than that, even the higher spec'ed ones. We in the U.S. tend to enjoy lower prices than the rest of the world because we enjoy greater overall competition. Just look at those of us in this forum! We are waiting on multiple models to be released and then will compare all of them on specs and price and make our decision. All of these companies (Acer, Asus, Apple, MSI, etc.) want our business. They have all had a relatively bad few years of sales. They know many like us are waiting on the sidelines to buy new products. They also know we still need to be careful with our money. Let's hope they all step up to the plate, release these soon, and come in with competitive prices.

Maybe, but we won't get the good specs (i7 + HD 5650), we'll get the same specs as Taiwan since in the U.S. we always get the garbage.

Yea, the $38,900 is NT or New Taiwan dollars.
Direct conversion via Yahoo's Currency Converter is $1223.50 US.

But I've been living in Taiwan for a while now.
So I know notebooks in Taiwan always cost 20% to 30% more
here than simply converting currency from NTD to USD.

I'd reduce that $1223.50 by at least 20%... comes to $978.
So look for a list price of just under $1000.

That sub 1000$ mark is also reflected by all the German websites that actually have 3820TG with i5 430 with the 1gb hd5650 listed at 850 Euro. I feel as though prices from Europe, as well as specs from Europe, are going to be more indicative to what we will be seeing in North America...

Or maybe that's just what I'm hoping for :D

I'm assuming that the 8:38hr for the 5820TG is using i5-430 + 5470 how much of an impact will the i7-620 + 5650 have on the battery? :D

You are so correct. Judging from the different posts that I see all of you on, I know that I am not the only one monitoring 5 or 6 different computers from different manufacturers.

So if Acer wants to overprice this, they will not see a dime from me.

UL30VT has a SU7300. ;) And the Core i3 is way faster and more powerful. In fact, all Core i3/i5/i7's from the UM's to the M's are faster and more powerful than the SU7300.

    If the i5 430M + HD 5650 combo costs 850 EUR in Europe (Germany) I think - and hope - the i5 540M + HD 5650 system would cost like 999 EUR.

Gadgets in the US cost 15-25 % less compared to european prices, so I think it'd cost less than 1400 USD.

In my post a few pages ago, I said basically the same thing. Plus these prices include the VAT which is a 19% charge in Germany.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6077363&postcount=937

I'm estimating $900 for this configuration. A bit more for the higher end versions.

No 5650 for the 13" model then? A shame really, it was looking like it'd stack up rather favourably to the M11x. The 5470 is pap and the 14" is that bit too big for what I'm ideally looking for (i.e. I can't just sling it in any bag I feel like and go).

Acer sells different models to more than fifty countries all over the world.
Any specific model may or may not ever be sold in any particular country.
Doesn't seem to be any methodology. Pricing varies greatly as well.

Just go to the Acer website.
Select a model, like the 1820pt.
Then pick various different countries in the upper right corner.
Even if the model is listed in a country, it may not be available.
So don't try too hard to apply reason to Acer's distribution network.

Yea.. Acer is a Taiwanese company,
But they always start off with the lowest models here.
For example, the 1810T just became available a month ago.
Nine months after some European countries.

Have you been reading this thread at all?

Holy crap, I see the same things been talked about throughout this whole thread! If you eve backtrack a few pages you will see that lower spec'd models are probably being sold first....

And I said waaaaaaaaaay back european prices and other countries prices are inflated due to taxes/surcharges. It's still being repeated what seems like 30 pages later...

Yea, they better put the 5650 in the 13" model here in the U.S.

***btw, when it comes to computer graphics, nVidia vs ATI, ATI is the better one isn't it? They seem to have more powerful cards all the time.

ATI is basically the better brand, but both types of cards work fine. However ATI cards have superior design, and are able to provide the same power as an nvidia equivalent card with less heat.
