    You are a cranky guy!
Look if we are just trying to pass the time and speculate on what and when were getting a official release date.
If some of the posters are bothersome than block them.
    No need for further comment.
    Thanks :p

Wouldn't an hd5650 for such a thin laptop cause a lot of heat though? The thicker lenovo y460 has an hd5650 and it overheats like crazy. Flawed design maybe? Hopefully the timelineX is much better than previous gen.

And I dont think the 65W adapter listed is enough for something like this.

    I don't like Timeline keyboard... :(
In particular I think directional arrows are fragile, with 4820TG or 3820TG I'd like to play games (PES, COD, ...)... I'm not sure that Acer directional arrows are good, they are little against Asus or HP... don't you know?

I might finally get the 3820gt after all this research.

Only things I might not like are the lower resolution, the audio.in/out on the right side, and the keyboard. Well I won't any real judgements until I get some comprehensive reviews.

As mentioned by "hostingone" message #1347 here at the ~Asus UL30JTthread...
Check out the new SonyVAIO notebook with an Intel® Core™ i5 Processor:
    Model VPCS111FM/S

Seems to be available at BestBuy for $1050.
Search BestBuy SKU: 9999124400050012 if link doesn't work.
Just barely thicker and a little heavier than the 1830T,
but has backlit keyboard, LED backlit display, and a dvd player.

    Quickie specs from CNET here.

Seems like reasonable competition for the 1830T,
    especially because its already available.

The SONY Vaio only has Intel HD graphics which is very weak compared to the ATI cards going into the TimelineX models.

The more I use my current Laptop, the more I realise how important build quality, sound and screen is.
I would love to pay a premium for stuff that is good in this area.

We know the older Timeline was made from a Metal chassis... So we can assume this won't be plastic junk?

I just wonder if the viewing angles will be ultra horrible as with so many LED screens. Same with Brightness... and the level of glossy. Anti glare?

I am okay with the resolution. Since it's a 13'' screen, I think it's a good native res. I had a Zepto 15'' with a 1600x??? screen, and it was way to small. it really made it annoying that many games couldnt handle such a high rez for the native resolution.
I think the quality of the screen is much more important. Hopefully below 5 ms, very high brightness, and little flex.

The Sony S series is certainly along the same lines as the Acer 3820TG. As you say it is a bit thicker. That plus the optical drive also make it a bit heavier. The biggest difference is the battery life--it's downright short on the S series and is what makes that computer a bad deal in comparison to the upcoming TimelineX series.

Whats really on my mind is I wanna get the 4820tg cus for me thats the perfectly sized screen, buf if it has only 1 heatsink it will probably heat up (y460)

I barely got over the idea of no usb 3.0, esata or expresscard, its not soo much of a great laptop like i used to think.

Dont have to buy till May, guess it's all gonna depend on reviews, hands on and what the MBP will be like.

So it is Monday again. Every Monday I wake up with the hope that Acer will announce something for the 3820TG. Does anyone thing anything is coming today? It's already pretty late in the day so I'm guessing probably nothing.

C'mon, the waiting and speculation is half the fun. I think the 3820TG, with all of its warts, is going to be a great computer. I have been working on my travel computer, a 1410T, for the past few weeks, so nobody is more eager to order a new TimelineX than me. I keep waiting to log on and read somebody posting that Tiger, New Egg or Amazon has my model for sale. I am ordering it immediately and ordering an x25 160GB SSD at the same time. Don't settle for less.

Can you ever be too good looking, too rich or have too much power? ;)

    Bronsky

@Ober - The 4820TG does not appear to have heat issues. USB 3.0 would have been nice but not a big deal for me. I am more interested in a functional keyboard. I will probably use an external at work. As for the new MBP, if it ever gets refreshed in the wake of the IPad release, it will still have an underpowered CPU/GPu combination.

Just a head up if anyone is planning on buying a new 160gb intel ssd g2, ebay is probably the best place. It's 439 on Amazon and Newegg. A new one on ebay is running around 400, that is before 8% Bing Cashback and 2% Ebay bucks ( example). I bought mine couple weeks ago around 370.

Wait, so you're right unfortunately. It won't be around $1,100 dollars in the US, it will be much more. Because as you said, the Singapore $1550 is with student discount, and there is NOT going to be a student discount in the U.S., right?

Some interesting sites have been popping up in Germany listing the 3820TG.

    Here is one: http://translate.google.com/transla...arch?q=acer+3820tg&hl=en&sa=X&tbo=1&tbs=qdr:d

    Another: http://translate.google.com/transla...arch?q=acer+3820tg&hl=en&sa=X&tbo=1&tbs=qdr:d

    Another: http://www.pcpraxis.de/store_1349602_Acer_Aspire_Timeline_X_3820TG434G64n.html

If you click the price it lists 849 EUR which is $1144 after currency conversion. This price does include the VAT, so a U.S. price would be lower. I'm having a hard time figuring out the math on a 19% VAT, but the starting price would probably be around 725 EUR which would be $977.

The main point is that with that kind of price, if it is accurate, we are looking at a price point in the U.S. anywhere from $900 to $1000 (possibly lower because we get better prices in the U.S. in general). It would not be anywhere close to the $1500 that some have proposed in this forum.

    Things are moving!

All three of those notebooks are the low spec I5-430 CPU. I would figure the I7-620M to cost $150 to $200 more in USD. That would put the I7-620M model at ~ $1,200. I still haven't seen any of the I7-620M 3820TG's anywhere.

Ah! Thanks for catching that! Still, I was looking more at the i5 anyway, and I would be pleased with a sub $1000 price especially with the good graphics engine.

What benefit should I expect in real life use if I got an sdd? Apart from the obvious less noise and moving parts. Will battery life increase? How many % overall increase in performance? I guess it will mostly increase read/write from disc and access time? I have never used a system with ssd.

Could the 640gb drive in the acer be used as an external drive? Would I void the warranty if I open the acer and put it in myself?

You probably won't see an improvement in battery life from what I read, nothing significant. The noise reduction is great and obviously loading, read and write speeds, and launching of applications will see big improvements. I also think that SSD's are less fragile since there are no moving parts

The i5 430m is a "neutered" i5 in regards to accelerating AES encryption. Simply said the 430m will not be able to offload wireless encryption to the same extent as its 520/540 siblings.

    From Notebookcheck:
"The 32nm cpu cores of the Westmere generation can also process some new instructions to accelerate AES encryptions. Still, these functions are deactivated on the Core i5-430M leading to some performance drawbacks in modern applications that support AES encoding using the new instructions (e.g. the Communications Suite test in the PCMark Vantage boosts up to 70% using AES in the faster Core i5-520M)."

I won't toy with SSD's cause I'm a noob with hardware. I'd just know how to install it (If you just need to replace old hard drive w/ ssd, i.e. if it goes in same socket). I've never formatted a drive or done a clean install of an OS.

If someone can provide a user(noob)-friendly guide on how to do these three things (install SSD, format a drive and clean install Windows 7) that would be great.

P.S. I read a little about clean install and it seems like a real pita, you have to find, download and save all the device drivers.

Dude, the alto stand is unbelievable. I opened it up (couldn't resist :D) and it screams quality. Stand is sturdy and the stand acts as a usb hub with 3 built in usb ports. I demo'd it for a few minutes with my Dell Vostro and it kept everything nicely elevated and the angle was perfect. Keyboard is super silent too. The only thing I wish this had was a backlit keyboard.. but for $20 I can't complain :D.

I decided to go with your recommendation and look at usb mice since I read BT mice eat up batteries and can lag often. I settled on the Logitech Performance MX .

Regarding that Zeroshock III, that's more of a sleeve right?

Anyone have recommendations for a case? with a shoulder strap preferably.

Here are the performance stats for a few of the full powered I-cores:

I5-430M - base clock speed 2.26ghz/ turbo clock speed 2.53ghz
I5-520M - base clock speed 2.40ghz/ turbo clock speed 2.93ghz
I5-540M - base clock speed 2.53ghz/ turbo clock speed 3.06ghz
I7-620M - base clock speed 2.67ghz/ turbo clock speed 3.33ghz

The I7-620M also has an extra 1GB cache.

The speed increases between the 430 and the 520/540 are significant considering that the I5-540 and the others draw nearly the same power. The I7-620M, with its 4GB cache is more powerful than the I5-540. Notebookcheck.com tested the I-cores and concluded that the I7-620M drew 10w more than the 540M at idle and 30W more under power. The suggestion is that the performance of the I7-620M comes at too high a price in increased power demand. The article also suggests that the higher power demand of the I7-620M will not permit it to overclock as well as the I5-540M.

There have not been enough of the I7-620M's in circulation to see if the power and performance issues raised by the I7's critics are borne out. I am taking a chance on the I7-620M. If it works as designed, I think the extra performance is worth the power costs, even if the early tests are accurate.

    Hope that answers your question.

@Bergs Faster access and increased efficiency.

@yeshhhh yea the zeroshock is a sleeve. My 3820T will go in a sleeve and then probably a 3" aluminimum briefcase when it leaves the office.

    4GB Cache! Whoa!

Impressive. My last processor was just 2 MB :(

    A 2000x performance increase ;)

That's not the whole story, though, since those turbo speeds are only for a single core.
% difference is given relative to the respective speeds for the i5-430M.
    CPU - base / 2core / 1core
    i5-430M - 2.27 (+ 0%) / 2.53 (+ 0%) / 2.53 (+ 0%)
    i5-520M - 2.40 (+ 6%) / 2.67 (+ 5%) / 2.93 (+16%)
    i5-540M - 2.53 (+12%) / 2.80 (+11%) / 3.07 (+21%)
    i7-620M - 2.67 (+18%) / 3.07 (+21%) / 3.33 (+32%)
