The 5650 should be much faster than the Geforce 210m. Agree with iNoob. It's annoying how both the UL30JT and the 3820TG are still unannounced for the US, I'd like to see some reviews to see whether the Core i5/i7 regular/CULV processors are worth waiting for compared to the CULV C2D.

I wondered the same thing. The attached picture shows what I found comparing one of the 3820TG configurations with the VT processor (along with my desktop i7 and my old Dell E1405 dinosaur). Now this is just processing power, not graphics included and how that would compare, but it does give you a sense of the difference.

Last time I'll mention this...
Historically, Acer releases new products throughout Asia and Europe,
including Eastern European countries well before releasing in the USA.
The AS1810 was available in China and Great Brittan months
before in the USA, for example. I think it has more to do with
production capacities than targeting countries for any particular reason.
The US did get the single core AS1410 fairly early, BTW.
Really, you just can't guess when and which models will show up
in various countries. Hope, but just don't expect too much for the US
in the next couple month. -
^yea unfortunately we'll get some piece of crap, us usual here in the usa.
-
Dont know any German, but I'm fairly sure it's not in stock yet.
-
You're right, it's not. I only checked it last week, and it had no ETA.
-
I'm from Germany and I just checked for 4820 at the stores:
At www.notebook.de
in Stock = "sofort lieferbar"
-- 4820T-334G32Mn , i3-330M, intel HD , NO ATI !
other models are expected to be available in 5-6 weeks and a preorder is possible
= "in ca. 5-6 Wochen lieferbar - Vorbestellung moeglich"
At www.notebooksbilliger.de
expected to be available in about 2-4 working days = "ca. 2-4 Werktage"
-- 4820T-334G32Mn , i3-330M , intel HD
-- 4820TG-334G50Mn , i3-330M , ATI HD 5470
expected to be available in more than 10 working days (>2 weeks) = "ca. 10+ Werktage"
-- 4820TG-434G640Mn , i5-430M , ATI HD 5650
...
Seems like the cheaper models with integrated intel GPU are arriving these days and the more powerful ones with ATI GPUs are still in the queue.
But no sign of the high end i7-620M model yet.
I also checked some other websites, but they have about the same availability.
You can check for yourself with this pricecrawler for some european Online Stores:

For 3820 just use: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?fs=acer+3820&in= -
Such a comparison would be useful to me because those are the two laptops I'm considering getting. One costs less, is better quality, has better warranty and longer battery life, the other is a lot faster but I give up in the other areas. But both are nice-looking ultraportables under $1000 that can play games. Bottom line, I want to know how much more gaming prowess I'll be waiting for if I don't buy the UL30VT right now.

Combination of intel i... and Ati 5470
http://www.notebookcheck.com/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23387.0.html
3D Mark2006:
i3-330M --> 3665 (1280x1024)
i3-330M --> 4121 (1280x768)
i3-350M --> 3702 (1280x1024)
i5-430M --> 4260
For comparison: intel i... and Ati 5650 (for Acer 3820 its a surcharge of ~130$)
http://www.notebookcheck.com/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5650.23694.0.html
i5-430M --> 7425 (1280x768)
i5-430M --> 6674 (1280x1024)
And according to the chinese review of an Acer 4820 with an overclocked 5650:
i7-620M --> ~10000 (overclocked)
....
In my opinion we have a clear winner.
The Asus-UL30VT certainly "can" play games, but I don't think I would be happy playing games with it. (I'm waiting for the Acer 4820 with i7-620M)
The Acer 3820 with i3 and Ati 5470 will be only about 25% faster in 3D Mark 2006 than the Asus-UL30VT, but the CPU alone is about twice as fast according to the posting of a2bucks.
Pay some bucks more and you could get an Ati 5650 GPU which is much better for gaming.
According to the review the messured battery life of the Asus is also at 8 hours and not 12 as advertised. Thats about the same as tested for the Acer.
So your remaining reasons are:
Asus: costs less, is better quality (?), has better warranty
or Acer: a lot faster -
Other pro versus con is wait versus no wait ( in stock)
-
Make that:
Asus: costs less, is better quality (?), has better warranty, can be bought today
Acer: a lot faster, have to wait who knows how long
Also I believe the Acer has AC3 encoding built in with Dolby Home Theater. The Asus has nothing like that, just digital out with HDMI I assume in stereo only (maybe AC-3 pass-thru).
Does the Acer have eSATA or USB 3.0? I thought I saw a mention somewhere of a cobo USB/eSATA port, but I'm not sure for which model. -
no - to both (and i really cant understand why...)
-
whats the deal with usb 3.0? what is it? seems like the new craze. Before it was hdmi and now its usb 3.0
-
well i think its about 10 times fast than usb 2.0 and that makes a hugh difference if you have to move a lot of stuff from one harddisk to another (backups etc.)....
i would be nice if the new acer has one, but it isn t a no go that i wouldn t by it -
You haven't spend enough time transferring data between a PC and a USB Hard drive then- it is absolutely painful. It's like a 25MB transfer rate.
Because laptops have smallish drives, it is nice to back-up information or play multimedia on a external hard disk. ESATA/USB 3 make tons of sense in a portable laptop.
Again, not a deal breaker, though. The 3820's projected specs are far superior to any similarly priced 13.3 on the market. -
usb 3.0 will be the jam when there is more devices.
just like when i bought an hdmi tv in 2006, i finally got to use the hdmi plug 2 years later when the cable box and my receiver got upgraded.
same thing with usb3..untill you actually own harddrives/devicess that are usb 3.0 spec, there will be no speed increase with existing hardware today.
matter of fact since there is no Native Chipset implementation from either intel or Nvidia, expect USB 3 laptops to use more power/less battery (not alot more) since an extra chip on the motherboard is required.
this will be an awesome feature toward end of this year when native chipset support is added, and the price premiums for usb 3 hardware are lowered or removed.
my own Hope for a solution to this problem is IF the 4820 allows for dvd drive to be removed and replaced with 2.5 or 1.8 hdd/ssd, than i can have a fast ssd and a ton of space on 2nd drive..without needing any external connections. if not i am 3820 all the way
basically usb 3 will be a deal breaker in the 2011 version of the timelines imho, and today it is a "nice to have".
another idea to help out:
with backups and multimedia gigabit ethernet--since most hdd today average out at about 60MB/sec transfers, gigabit ethernet (or maybe wireless N ) provide enough bandwidth to keep up with hdd. i have a laptop for my tv which streams 1080p content over gigabit and it has been working super awesome for a couple of years. I tried wireless N on 2.4 g spectrum, and it worked for me as well (my old laptop does not support N, so i can;t use wireless only or i would). altho as with all wireless, your mileage may vary

Has anyone got a comparision between a...
Core 2 Duo SU7300 vs. Core i5 520UM...?? -
Yes, after consulting with top hardware specialists I can roughly estimate the performance difference between SU7300 and i5 520 as HUGE. Like a Prius compared to a (lower range) Ferrari
-
Well he was comparing it to a i5-520UM not 520M so it might not be as big as expected. Then again the acer doesn't even have the i5-520UM as an option so i think hes comparing it to the i5-520M
-
Fantastic, i hope they sell the 5820TGs as well when i go to china in june because my aunt needs one. Any idea on the pricing of 4820TG in china currency?
-
i'm trying to compare
SU7300 vs. 'ULV' Core i5 520UM
Anyone has any reviews or benchmarks for the Core i5 520UM...?? -
It doesn't look like it. Usually you can find them at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html.
I don't think Intel has produced them yet, which is why you don't have benchmarks for them. -

Indeed they do! Thanks for the head up. So, I guess they do exist, but maybe not all the versions yet. Here's to hoping, though I think they won't come out in the kind of system I want until after I'm looking to buy.

The hinge on the 3820T looks vulnerable while the hinge on the 4820 looks stronger and more protected.
The size of the 3820T looks perfect though. I can't wait.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The hinge looks exactly the same type as on my 3810t, no problems with it. And iNoob.x, that is the 5810 not 5820. -
That's 3810T, not 3820T
3820T's hinge is the same with 4820T and 5820T and also it has different touchpad and no dedicated button to disable the touchpad.

Oh, damn. I just found these pictures from people trying to sell these laptops on TaoBao (陶宝
, a Chinese ebay kinda site. I guess a lot of them didn't actually have the laptop and just used the x810 series pictures. Fool me once...
Thanks for clarifying! -
Does anyone have information on ACER TRAVELMATE 8372 ?
-
when does the 3820 get released?
tossing up between it and the u30jc and dell vostro 3300 -
It has already been released in Singaopre. Low spec models have been released in Europe. UK is supposto have them the first week of May. No word on the US yet.
I am waiting for mine and lovin my 1410T.

-
I really like the size of the 3810T. Anybody know if the 3820TG will have the same footprint? I hope so.

i'm starting to think on buying an Dell E4300 with:
PROCESSOR Intel® Core 2 Duo P9400 2.4GHz,
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows XP pro
LCD PANEL 13.3" Widescreen WXGA (1280x800) LED Display - Brush Metal Black
GRAPHICS GMA 4500MHD
MEMORY 4.0GB, DDR3-1066 SDRAM
INTERNAL KEYBOARD Internal English Backlight Keyboard
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT No Intel® vPro Secure Advanced Hardware Enabled Systems Management
PRIMARY STORAGE 160 GB Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
OPTICAL DRIVE 8X DVD-Rom w/Roxio and Cyberlink PowerDVD
WI-FI WIRELESS CARD 802.11b/g/ Draft Mini Card
Bluetooth
all for 599.99 USD
almost convinced... it's lighter, cheaper, and I might keep my desktop to play games, and use this one just for internet + office work. -
Funny. I bought this 1410T to use while I wait for my 3820TG. In the interim, I added a BT module, 4GB 800 mhz DDR2, 8 GB SD and a 40 GB Intel x25-G2 SSD. I am loving the size and performance of this little wonder. It will be hard to relegate to second place once the 3820TG comes out.

I'm wondering could the anyone who managed to score the 4820TG in Singapore give a report of the battery life? Does it actually last 8 hrs with Wi-fi on with just a 6 cell battery?
Thanks. -
I guess it looked identical becuase it was.
-
bronsky, when do you think our 3820 will hit the shelves in USA?
-
Realistically, I think we will probably have an anouncement in early May, when the UK models start to ship and we will probably start seeing the higher spec'ed machines in early to mid-June.
I expect that I won't be seeing my 3820TG until near the end of June, even though I am going to order the first I7-620M/HD 5650 that I see on a USA retailer's site.

I've used Vostro, Latitude E6400, and E6500.
If it'll be a bussines machine, go for the E4300. The price is nice, built quality is good too, just make sure You purchase a decent warranty.
Battery life is great with extended battery, You can add a battery slice too, though I never used them because the first one sticks out of the back, second one makes it bulky, one of my collegaues loved them both, anyways, for the E4300 the 6 cell battery should be used.
Great bussines performance, no gaming. -
This is from Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ:
Dimensjoner (BxDxH) 32.2 cm x 22.8 cm x 2.9 cm

and this is for the Acer Aspire Timeline 3820TG Intel i5 430:
Dimensjoner (BxDxH) 32.4 cm x 23.5 cm x 2.9 cm
http://www.netshop.no/aspx/produkt/prdinfoVnet.aspx?plid=144811
As you see, pretty much the same=) The weight is respectively 1.6, and 1.8 kg according to these productpages. The size should be the same for the i7 model, perhaps it could get a bit more weight, but I doubt it unless dei have a larger battery=) -
I have a small concern, there isn't any laptop with i5 and IGP that can reach 8 hrs. Is it i5-520um used in this new laptop?
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
No these all use full 35W Core i5's. -
Then, i would say the speculations are too optimistic.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
But we have reviews in this thread where 8 hours was achieved. -
So many people on these forums doubting the power of the migthy ACER TIMELINE X!
I have a question, does having a low resolution screen make DVD watching less pleasurable? Or does a DVD look the same no matter what resolution screen?
