Yup, very much doubt the 1830t will have the GT310M or a Core i3 like some sites are saying.

This new 320M integrated GPU in the MBP is interesting though. Even without dedicated ram, it will probably perform similar to a discrete 310M. It is designed to work with CULV processors. Even though it's way too little for the Apple 13, this would be an interesting option for CLUV 11.6" notebooks like the 1410T and the 1830T and provide some real graphics capability without too much power loss.

If the 11.6in TimelineX comes with an intel i core cpu, and nvidia 320m(either the standard or GT model) switchable, I would get one and try to hackintosh it or something. Even better if comes with a matte screen, but I would think that would be in the Travelmate line and if the 11.6in.

I soo want the 3820T but with the ASUS U30Jc out now, it is getting hard for me to focus. I think the Acer beats it out in weight and CPU though as the only ASUS U30Jc I have seen is 4.8 lbs and only has an Intel i3-350M.

    Check it out here:

    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-U30JC-A1-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Silver/dp/B0036ZEANO

If Acer confirm that the US version of the 3820T will have an i5-540 and the ATI HD 5650, I will be all over it.

    Asus:
    Better warranty
    Has ODD

    Acer:
    Better CPU
    Better GPU
    Thinner
    Lighter

The fact that the U30JC has an ODD automatically puts it in another category altogether (let alone the far superior GPU/CPU) and is just apples vs oranges compared to the 3820TG.

That's assuming the 3820T has an i5 and the ATI HD 5650 and neither have been confirmed yet.

    +1 for Asus there.

    U30JC = 9.5 hours
    3820TG = 8 hours
Unless something goes really wrong, I think it's safe to say that configuration will be available. Just a matter of where :D.

The U30JC is 4.8lbs, no? That's a lot heavier than the 3820TG which weighs under 4lbs...

If you're not concerned with the laptop being portable I guess weight is not an issue. For a 13", 1 lb. is a big difference in portability.

4.8lbs is like carrying a brick compared to the 3.9lbs from Acer's 3820.

Weight is a huge issue.. I said 6 posts up the Acer is lighter and thinner.

Now why would you consider the U30JC? The advantages of the 3820 far outweigh that of the Asus. I think the UL30JT would be more of a comparable product to the 3820TG.

And I agree, anything heavier than ~4lbs and thicker than ~1 inch is like carrying a brick.

    I'm currently using a Toshiba Satellite T135-S1305. It's 3.9lbs and 1.35" thick. It's extremely portable and I get giddy when I think about my future 3820TG :D.

I'm not considering the U30JC or even the UL30JT one bit. I was just clarifying the pros and cons for user "spgift."

It still boggles me when people compare the 3820TG to the U30JC/UL30JT. Apples vs oranges...

Why? 13.3" machines with Core i processors, switchable graphics, and less than 1lb separates all three in weight. Is it that hard to comprehend that these machines are similar enough that people might desire one of the three?

Thanks for your reply :) If the 13 inch 3820TG with 5650 and either i5-540m or i7-620m is confirmed for release, I'll wait. I know it's hard to combine portability and gaming but I just can't miss Starcraft 2 :)

I don't know if this was mentioned before.
Here are some specs of the upcomming Travelmate Timeline series and other new Acer notebooks:
    ht tp://ww w.notebookcheck.com/NBC-vor-Ort-Das-Acer-Notebook-LineUp-2010.28856.0.html
(copy and delete the two spaces)

    Travelmate Timeline 8x72 series
    - 8 hours battery life (Mobile Mark 2007 Productivity Mode)
    - non-glossy display ( at least not extreme glossy)
    - 11,6" , 13,3" , 14" and 15,6"
    - only the 11,6" has no optical drive
    - Intel Core i3/i5 CPU
    - optional NVIDIA GT310M or GT330M GPU with HDMI out
    - seems like the GT330M is only available in 14" and 15,6"
    - interface for Easyport 4 Portreplicator (Ethernet, VGA, DVI-D, USB)
    - fingerprint reader
    - optional WWAN (UMTS)

    ...

    Only NVIDIA GPUs?
No need to wait for the new non-glossy Travelmate TimelineX series anymore.

I think I will settle for an 3820TG or 4820TG with i5, Ati 5650 and an extra Anti-reflection film for the display.

    ...
    edit: corrected intel->nvidia

Sorry, this probably won't cheer You up or make Your life complete, but AFAIK the 540M+HD5650 configured 3820TG is not available yet, the srongest system seems to be the 430M+HD5650 gadget, and we have 620M+HD5650 in Singapore, but only in Singapore.

I guess it'd take time till Acer releases the 3820 with faster CPUs than the 430M, don't know how long it would take, the 4820 modell is already available with 520M+HD5650 in China, that might mean Your prefered (520M or maybe the 540M even) system would be available in 1-2 months.

BTW it seems there's a better availablity for the 4820 models, as I've said it's even available with 520M+HD5650, though I'm afraid with the integrated ODD the 4820's heat management would not do a good job, the 3820 should do better due to bigger space for cooling, the german "kurztest" didn't mention anything about dual air vents.

Those are Nvidia GPUs (and it's 310M, no GT) - Intel doesn't make discrete GPUs.

Still, they're much weaker than the 5650.

There was an I5-520M/HD 5650 3820TG listed on the Ghezalis site. So, at least there is at least a full powered I5 model out there. I was pleased to see the german notebook check article confirm that the 3820TG will be getting the I7-620M and the HD 5650. I'm begining to think it might be a long wait. Luckily, I'm a patient man. :D

Sorry I've missed that, I was browsing with mobile, thanks for clarifying! It's good to know the i5 520M is available, that or the i5 540M would be enough for me, I'll go and fetch some product number from Ghezalis site so my retailer can tell me whether I can get one in 4 weeks or have to wait more.

As for the cooling design of the 3820TG, don’t know whether it’s a repost, if so, my appologies.

One of the german 3820TG users posted that the right side air vent blows air continuously. (The air vent was refered to as „the one to your right hand when facing the screen”, that makes me feel we were right about the dual air vents regarding the 3820).

I asked the german users to confirm whether the 3820TG has two air vents, I’ll keep you informed. Edit – german users confirmed it has two air vents.

Anyways, the user says the vent only stops when the lid is closed, the second the lid is open again, air starts to flow and wouldn’t stop, giving the system a constant operating noise.

The blown out air is cool on idle use, no reports about overheating or any temperature related issue.

Edit: Could someone please show me the link, I could only find the 430M+HD5650 combo on Geizhals.

I just bought the 13.3", i5-430M, ATI HD5650 model... will test it next friday =)

There is no 520M at geizhals and it's not available for germany, the most powerful processor for it is the i5-430M (at least for the 13.3" model).

whats the difference between the aspire & travelmate series. I really like the new 11" versions of each type with the "iX" processors. Do you think either of the 11in versions with have the proper graphics chips to be able to play hd video just fine (i.e. no stuttering when watching youtube or hulu in hd) or should I go with the 13inches for each one.

My only hesitation about each one is that the 13inch might be too big.

The Travelmate is just the business version of the Timeline. The primary difference is that it will have a matte rather than glossy screen and a fingerprint reader. There might be two versions of the Travelmate, one offering more advanced ATI graphics, the other offering weaker NVIDIA cards. Looks like another difference might be that the Travelmate 13 inch model will have an optical drive, whereas the regular TimelineX 13 inch does not.

If the Travelmate is offered with the ATI 5650, it should handle HD video with ease. But I would guess the 5650 will not be available in the 11 inch model. So you'd be stuck with a much weaker graphics card.

Congratulations. It will be great to hear your review. Would love to see some benchmarks for the I5-430M and a 3dMark06 score for the HD5650 without any overclocking. Core and GPU temperatures would also be apprecitated.

Display, wieght and appearence impressions would also be appreciated.

I don't care if the fans run 24 hours a day if they keep the GPU/CPU temps in check. In a 13" device, I would expect a lot of mechanical cooling. Someone will probably modify the 1810 Tray program to control the fans anyway ... :D.

Yea. I was glad for confirmation of the 2 heat sinks. Makes it more probable that heat will not be an issue in this powerful little notebook. Exciting news all around. Now Acer, how about an american anouncement.

Interesting. The model of 3820tg with ati hd5650 is available in Norway! Finally! It is the one with i5 430m though. That is the most powerful configuration I've seen here this far, and apparently it's in stock.

It's interesting to see Norway has been among the countries leading in the availability on this machine. I didn't think we were before in gadgets, but I certainly like this new trend :D

It costs about 1000 NOK more than the one with 5470 and i5 430m. That translates to about $170 today=) I would say it's worth it! I do however wonder how much more a more powerful i5, og i7 configuration would cost. I do not know how much extra I would pay for that.

Is the only difference between i5 420m, i5-540m and i5-520m is the clock frequency, right? As with the i7-620m? Would that mean I could just compare the frequency to find out how many % faster they are? Thanks =)

Does anyone have any concrete info on the ATI Switchable Graphics solution? I can't seem to find anything definite online; such as a review, or detailed description of the technology.

From what I managed to gather online, it seems that the laptop must be plugged in to take advantage of the discrete GPU. I sincerely hope this is not the case, as it would discourage me from purchasing this laptop.

That's probably the default, but I'm sure you can edit the preferences to allow for discrete graphics on battery

I certainly hope so, that would probably be a deal breaker for me.

Sorry for repost, but does anyone know if the German models have a US keyboard or a special German keyboard, and if German models are in German even outside the OS (ie the bios). Living in Europe and very interested in having it shipped over.

The 620M also has an extra gigabyte of cache. But generally they are higher clocked versions of the same CPU.
