An extra gigabyte? I thought the difference was one megabyte.
-
it's a type it should be megabyte
as for the switchable graphics card I never read anything about battery/plugged but it takes like 5 seconds and IE needs to be closed (not chrome/ffox tho) -
Hm, well the review of the 4820TG was as expected.
I wonder if the 3820TG will have the better cooling concept.
Anyways, the Travelmate with matt screen seems more attractive to me, even if it is only the GT330M. -
I think for an english layout in europe you could order at a shop in uk. -

There is one significant difference - the top i5 processors and the i7 one have additional AES instructions which should speed up when using encrypted wifi or HDD.

Hi all!
I have been following this thread for quite a while now and I looking forward to get my TimelineX soon.
It hasn't been mentioned before but they are available in France.
Interestingly, it seems they are a bit cheaper in France than in Germany whereas VAT is quite the same in both countries...

So far, I couldn't find any 3820 or 5820 though.

About the differences in processors (other than the clock speed and L3 cache), apparently the i5 430m is missing VT-d, Trusted Execution, and AES features. According to Notebookcheck. I have absolutely no clue what any of those things mean though - somebody care to explain? -

VT-d: Not important.
AES: Good to have, even AMD Bulldozer processors coming next year will have it. -

Appearently shipping the 27th this month. Was confused because they had a green light besides the shipping status as they have on already shipping items. Bummer
But I can wait two weeks for this, and maybe we have 540 or maybe the i7 by then=)

The second one has a 9 CELLS battery! Do you think it will stick out?
However, by the german review doesn't seem that good... I am disappointed expecially by the low contrast and the fan noise. BUT perhaps the 3820 will have a less noisy fan system, and we have to hope the the mass production model that they will receive next week will have some improvements. -
http://www.netonnet.no/art/data/laptop/laptop-13---14-tom/acer-as3820tg-434g64n/013657.5055/
Netonnet.no claims it has 12 hours battery life on a 9-cell battery. This can't be right? thats more than anything I've read about it... or?
All other configurations I've seen this far i Norway had 8 hours. I had a hard time finding stores providing details about how many cells, just said 8 hours lithium. I did however come over one store with i5 430 and ati 5470 claiming 8 hours on a 6-cell battery...

here is a good review, just use google translate:

The only problem with the Acer, is the screen...and in game it is not as fast as the N82JV. -
The reason for N82 better peformace is that they have i7 model (not even available in Europe) vs. 4820 with i5 430.
My biggest worry tho is that they reported temperatures while gaming constanly rising up to 92 C after which laptop shut itself down. That is really something that needs to be investigated.
I did own a gaming laptop that had the same issue due to the whole range being faulty. After that I'm really paranoid when it comes to temperatures.
Btw, it my first post on this forum so hello everyone. -
so whats the overall consensus of which is better because I want to get either one, the acer 3820tg or the asus ul30jt
-
I wish some1 would make an esata hack for this

My current lappy is the Acer Travelmate 4200 series (15.4 inch behemoth) that runs quite hot and whose fan runs all the time. The only problem I found is that my HDDs (two of them) seemed to burn out/die and I believe it was because of the heat. Hopefully the 3820 fans will cool the machine but my paranoia will steer me away if the fans will be running all the time. I guess if I had an SSD it would not be an issue but I still hate the sound of a laptop fan going constantly.
Would the assumption that the i5 chips will run much cooler than the i7 chips be a correct one? After having a 15.4 inch machine, for 4 yrs, my preference is for a smaller and lighter lappy that won't run hot. And I am just loving these new TimelineX machines.
Acer really needs to make a US announcement soon (ACER are you listening??!!) as there are lots of people sitting on the fence who are also considering Asus machines (such as the UL30JT) as well. -
@ Bronsky: I was thinking that since it has 2 fans maybe you can have them both running at lower speeds and hence have less noise, although as I understand 1 of them is dedicated to the GPU, which means that I am wrong. The other consideration may be that, since it has no ODD, maybe there's more space for air to pass through... Whatever, I hope that a tech-savy will make some customized fan manager.
@ Berg: I saw 9 CELLS on 4820 in Italy but is TBE, so I wouldn't rely on those specs. That is the first 3820 with 9 cells I saw. If it's not going to stick out it would be absolutely amazing.
@Slumpey: I posted maybe two or three pages ago the first official review of the ul30jt.. And it's absolutely disappointing, read it for yourself.. -
How easy is it to access the heatsinks and fans for cleaning/modding/upgrading?

if i get it sent to Canada does warranty apply to Canada? :/

crappy display? :| oh damn now i have to rethink this all over again
why cant OEMs put the same display that macbooks have, now those are some awesome displays
how would the gamut display of the new aspires compete with the timelineX -
So what did the German reviewer say about the 3829TG. Was that an I7 model or where they saying you can get up to an I7?
-
-
Poor displays seem to be a specialty of Acer's. I suspect these will still sell a lot, but they should probably have offered a higher-quality, higher-resolution display in a high-end model.
-
and i prefer apples -
The german speaker said they would exist in core i3, i5 and i7.
No it wasn't an i7, it was the i3 model as you can see on the sticker.
For the specs that are displayed: "bis zu" --> up to... -

Is there an official date for the 13/14in to drop in the US?

I'm starting to lose faith even though i'm not getting a laptop until summer XD -
Large vents - I likeee!

Buddah -
it's ok, almost dinner time -
I predict it will come out in Canada/US with only i5 430m configurations in May/June, and as soon as you purchase one they will release 520m/540m versions for back to school. i7 620m might come out for the holidays.... if at all.
There's my pessimistic view of how things are looking. -

So the screen apparently isn't too great. Sigh, I don't think I will be able to live with that. Well we will see.
Looks like it might be time to start waiting for the Envy refresh.
