thats really cheap, considering what is in it. about $1000 usd for the higher up one. (without the external drive). i wonder what the screen quality and stuff is like tho
-
-
That Dell would have to be priced significantly cheaper than the 3820TG for me to consider it.
Heavier, thicker, and probably only has one heatsink/fan/vent.
I am more than willing to pay the premium for Acer's lighter, thinner, and cooler 3820. -
agreed, but its nice to know that there will be options soon hopefully
-
Is there even going to be xps 13" refresh? It would be nice to get RGB LED screen but I thought they've got discountiniued.
This inspirion looks allright. Even price for i5 430 is similar as for the same speced 3820. I doubt the'll beat 8+ hrs battery life of Timelines tho. -
That Dell does look nice, however its larger and starting to push my weight limit...Starting weight of 4.22 lbs. (1.92 kg) And thats the starting weigth.
-
if you happen to be in Singapore right now, seems like the 3820TG (1698SGD) and 4820TG (1989SGD) is on sale at a IT fair at Singapore Expo right this moment
-
Nice, shame I was there only a few months ago
But no 3820tg then.
-
There will probably be an xps 13 but not until Q4 or the end of the year. Too late to be a real alternative to the 3820TG. When it was discontinued, Dell reps indicated that the 13 had to be completely redesigned due to interrior space limitations. I like the Inspiron, I've always been partial to Dell, but it does not compete directly with the Acer. It would just be an alternative for someone looking for those specs. Me - I'm still waiting patiently.

Now, according to SlashGear (and other sites), the 1830T will come out in June in Germany (maybe US too?).
Still hoping for a 3820TG release in this month in the U.S.
They do have pricing listed for many of the low end models.
Acer TimelineX 1830T, 3820T, 4820T and 5820T priced - SlashGear
Acer TimelineX 1830T landing this June for €549 - TechSpot News -
th 1830t doesn't have a discrete graphic card right?
-
The 1830t model doesn't have a discreet graphics card, but the Travelmate version can have an optional GT310 card though.
I wonder if they're awaiting real availability of Intel i3UM and i5UM processors to launch these laptops in the rest of the countries... -
I'm considering the 4820 with i7 and SSD. But i'm worried about the temps. Ati 5650+i7 might be too much for this small notebook. What do you think? And does the SSD save enough battery to balance the consumption of an i7?
-
Not by a longshot...
-
No 11.6" Timeline or Travelmate has a discrete GPU. They use the Integrated GPU on the Core I CPU. The rumor about the 310M is a misreading of an article on the Travelmate.
As I have said, I would jump on an 11.6" with a GPU and sell my 1410T (which I love)

Acer is producing one of its flagship models around the 4820TG/I7-620M/X25-M SSD named Il Diavalo. The I7-620M seems to be operating fine in the 13" 3820TG's that have been tested in Singapore. I would think that Acer would do an equally good job engineering heat removal from the 4820TG's CPU.
The real question, it occurrs to me, is whether the cooling system is so taxed in the I7-620M model that there is no room to control higher temps resulting from OC'ing. I have been playing with the ATI 5870 that I put in my new desktop. I am amazed at how well it overclocks and how stable it remains. I am assuming that the HD 5650 will be stable at decent OC'd speeds as well. At that point, I think you get a larger performance boost by OC'ing the GPU, which is sure to bottleneck earlier than the CPU. The I5-540M or even the 520M might be a better fit, keeping the cooling system untaxed so that it can deal with the extra heat generated in OC mode. It will be interesting to see if the I7-620M can run with the GPU in an OC'd state without having thermal issues.
I'm just waiting for the day that I log on and somebody has posted that New Egg or Amazon has the 3820TG and the biggest decision I have to make is which model or how do I want it shipped.

We used to be able to but that ability was taken away. -
How long does this fair last?

If you go, tell the retailers that they could probably sell as many high spec models as they can ship.

Does anyone know when these (particularly the 3820T) will be released in the US, and which sites/stores will be selling them?
I cant seem to find anything online. -
The only hint has been a May release--and here we are in May finally. But, with the delays hitting many models for many companies, there is no way to know for sure until they release models or send out a press release with the release dates. Because the models are beginning to go out to Asia and Europe and some have already gotten their hands on some of the versions, it seems likely that we will see a release in the U.S. sometime this month. Who knows, maybe we will actually hear something on Monday. I wouldn't bet on it!

Very bad news of the 4820TG's heat management
Prime and Furmark Load:
The CPU is continuously throttling from 2,4GHz to 1,2GHz.... 90°C CPU and 86°C are very bad temperatures. This happens with the Core i5 430M and I am rly afraid how the 4820TG will handle the 540M or Core i7 620M.
Acer totaly failed at the 4820TG heat management.
Notebookjournal.de Load testing results also into shutdown of the device... -
Two new "German" reviews are Online:
1. Acer Aspire 3820TG-334650MN , i3-330M , Ati 5470
Notebookcheck: Test Acer Aspire 3820TG Timeline X Notebook
2. Acer Aspire 4820TG-434G64Mn , i5-430M , Ati 5650
Notebookcheck: Test Acer Aspire 4820TG-434G64Mn Notebook
...
These reviews show the difference between the brightness of the displays. The display in the 3820 is not as bright as the one in the 4820.
The same discrepancy in quality was also detected by the reviews at notbookjournal.de

I could not find the part about the 1420TG Prime/Furmark heat management test in the translated review. Where were you getting that information?
With the Il Diavilo being released next week in Germany, we sould have the answer to the 4820TG heat issues once and for all. What I was struck by was the inability of the I5-430M to maximize the power of the HD 5650 GPU. It looks like the 430M runs out of power long before the 5650 does. It looks like higher powered CPUs are a must on machines containing the HD 5650 if the CPU is to maximize the GPU's potential. I was surprised that the 430M was the bottleneck.
Again we hear that the keyboard is less than stellar. The display looks adequate, not much more. Acer has wrapped a fairly mediocore device around the most powerful 13" GPU combination on the market.
Although I will probably be unpopular for saying this, if I was looking for 14" unit, I would go with the Asus N82JV. In the states, it will come with an I7-620M/GT 335M combination. It will also have USB 3.0/Optimus/Asus warranty and, most of all, can be preordered some time next week. Cost is in the area of $1,000. With the spotty distribution and potential heat issues, the slight difference in performance between the 335GT and the HD 5650 is outweighed by 4820TG's potential cooling issues and Acer's chaotic distribution.
On the 13" side, however, there is still nothing even close to the 3820TG in performance. Moreover, the extra attention paid to the cooling systems makes it attractive. I am still not thrilled by the weak keyboard and display. If Dell anounced a new Studio XPS 13 today, with an I5-540M/I7-620M/HD5650/1600 x 900 display, I would probably hold off on the 13" replacement (and do my graphics work at home on my I7-930/5870 in the interim
) and wait for it.
Unfortunately, the XPS 13 is not due for another 4 months and there is no guarantee that Dell will go with a 5650 GPU or its equivalent. So, I am still a potential Acer customer by default. Not quite a ringing endorsement.

Notebookcheck.de:
Just scroll down to Temperature.
"While CPU (~ 40 ° C) and GPU (~ 45 ° C in idle mode still properly be cooled), they become hot under full load (Prime Furmark +) very strongly to up to 86 ° C (GPU), respectively 90 ° C (CPU). The CPU can clock the result always of 2.40 down to 1.20 GHz, so that the temperature of the core i5-430M short period fell to 80 ° C."
And the part from Notebookjournal.de:
"Problems?
However, our test unit had problems with full utilization of all hardware. Our stress test (processor and graphics card are set with prime95 and ATI tool under load) survived the press sample, less than five minutes and switched off at a temperature of about 92 ° C. The load during 3D games like World Conflict and Call of Duty 6 held in our test model, however several hours over. By agreement with Acer, we will next week further identical 4820TG obtained from mass production and in the test. The manufacturer put stress test after ours and was from a successful run one night to report on."

Anyway this issues doesnt exist for the 3820TG. But I dont understand Acer how they could put such a crappy heat management into their 4820TG.
And yes I rly want to pull the trigger for the N82JV... but we get it only with 520M. -
I feel bad for people waiting on the 3820....
The Screen quality seems to be a Big let down... I mean what good is any laptop config if the screen is pathetic.... But then the UL30JT's Screen is nothing Great either....
What good 13 inchers are out there now with good Screens excpet for the Current King.... The Sony Z...!!! -
For good screens, it's pretty much just the VAIO Z and the 13" MBP.
-
what loc said
-
what is "il diavilo"?
-
Don't know about people in US but for me here in UK the bottom line is that 3820tg costs aroung £750 which means I can fit half-decent desktop in my 1500 buget. Any N82JV and such costs at least 200 more not to mention Sony Z which is 2.5 time more expensive than Acer.
I don't think there is much that can put people already set on 3820 off now. I'm guessing most of us are professionals or students with certain computing needs that this model can accomodate the best. I for example need a machine that is easy to carry around, with battery that holds 2.5 hrs train journey on full processing power, can be used for light CAD and make a quick 3D render on the go. Plus that can play an odd mmo on low settings so I can keep in touch with my guildies when travelling
.
Think about all the poor people with GX640 with i5 430 and ati 5850... -
the question is: is the i5 430 under the expectations or the 5650 above them?
-
Acer Aspire Timeline 4820TG-624G16Mns "Il Diavolo"
- Intel Core i7-620M, 2,6GHz
- 4GB RAM
- 160GB SSD-HDD
- ATI HD 5650
For preorder at some german online shops and amazon.de
But I don't believe it will be available in the next two weeks. -
i think it's a bit too much for the 4820's cooling system
-
Yea but if cooling was fine then it would be pretty decent price. Only £250 price increase for processor upgrade to i7 620 and 160 gb ssd. I was expecting Il Diavolo to be more overpriced.
-
The MBP is not capable of serious graphics work, in spite of its beautiful display. That leaves the Z with its GT330M, which would probably do what I need to do, but will be obsolete in less than a year. $2,200 ...
As for the furmark test - WoW!!
An I5-430M heat throttling? OMG, what will the I7-620M do under similar circumstances? With the German release of the I7-620M pending, I suppose that we will see the effect. The only question left is "what are the real world consequences?"
I agree that there are a group of us that need the portability and GPU power and we are kind-of stuck on the 3820TG. Thank god the designers built the better cooling unit in the 13" or I would still be waiting.

Not to discredit the tests that were done on the machines on the german website... I'm having a great time with my 4820TG unit at the moment.
I used it to play Star Trek online with full effects on, watch videos etc, its been great so far
Temperature wise hmm it gets warm on the left palm rest, bottom is warm but not hot.
CPU trottling.. wats that, i'm not a techie but I don't observe anything strange while gaming etc.
Screen - very bright, dunno abt the 3820 tho
All in all, a powerful machine in a very portable form factor -
I think you're going too far to say it's not capable. For your specific tasks, perhaps not, but then you should be more specific
The user I was responding to was only asking about good screens and nothing else in particular, anyway. -
Could you clarify what you're basing this on?
-
Good to hear
What CPU do you have?
Can you please download HWMonitor and turn it on while gaming?
