Screen flex? I think people mean keyboard flex. Mushy keyboards...That I understand. But screenflex is being just unrealistic. If I go to the acer store grab hold of a laptop. Open it up and grab the screen with two hands. With my left hand pull and my right hand push. Will it flex? Of course...Its a thin notebook!!! Unless its solid titanium.
And you shouldn't have to use a laptop cooler either. I've had laptops for many years and never used that junk. And never had issues either. I live in Spain and here it hits over 42 degrees (108F) in summer. So its not like I'm in Antarctica either. Seriously if a notebooks cooling is design correctly it wouldn't need one. Otherwise it would come with a notebook cooler...
Lol a 13' notebook with a cooler would look like a joke too haha. I guess you'll plaster it with invisible shields and screen proctors (with bubbles) and keyboard plastic covers....Or be one of those types that still have the original packing plastic on the laptop and advertising stickers years later!

I thought that the timelineX was supposed to be a good bang for the buck laptop
why does so many reviews say it's expensive?? are they comparing it to $499 clearance laptops ???
Btw, how much is the TimelineX in HK ? plz and thx my frd is leaving hk soon so I might get him to buy it =] -
If you use your notebook, as I do, for serious writing (6-8 hrs per day) keyboard flex is annoying. The movement of the keyboard under your fingers when you are flying along at 80+ wpm, causes more errors than normal. That is why I found it necessary to break out the double sided tape on my 1410T.

-
Many notebook manufacturers are now using double sided tap under the keyboards. So they are listening.
-
Congratulations! That is the first US sighting of a Timelinex 3820T. We're getting closer. There are a number of sites that listed that model today. Provantage seems to be getting the Acer line as quickly as anyone else. Cost central has the same model for $702. This is only $38 more than the Travelmate 8172 (11.6" - I3-330UM)
. Odd that Acer would price them so close.
Now go find me an I7/5650 3820TG.
Pls.

Could someone direct me to the page that lists the SKUs for various Timeline X models?
I know someone posted several somewhere in this thread, but I cannot seem to find it with search...or alternatively does anyone know offhand any of the various i5 / 5650 product SKUs? -

The three AS3820 models I show coming to the PanAm (US/CA) region:
LX.PTC02.087 AS3820T-5246-US W7HP64/I3350M/4G/320/BT
LX.PTB02.190 AS3820TG-3022-CA W7HP64/I5450M/4G/500/BT
LX.PTC02.093 AS3820T-5851-CA W7HP64/I3350M/4G/320/6L -
Please tell me the CA in the last two refer to Canada? Also, the second one is i5 450M with 4GB of ram, 500gb HDD, blue tooth, and 5650?? yeah? maybe? -
Yes CA is for Canada, as far as the graphics card it includes, I'm unable to confirm this one way or another at the moment.
-
The funny thing is that the shortage is associated with I3-330, I3-350 and I5-430 versions, all of which are plentiful in the Timelinex models. Go figure.
Bronsky
-
no i7? that is utter junk for me.
-
Thanks for the info
Also, I doubt you'd be able to confirm a launch date and/or pricing info? -
Looks like a large distributor, Synnex Canada, has them, so should be making it to retailers soon: http://ec.synnex.ca/vendors/ACER.html

nice news
but an i3 or lower i5 model with the 3820tg is such a waste. only the i7 does it justice imo lol -
The only place that has seen the I7 in full release is Singapore. I think that the high spec'ed models will come a bit later. I just want to see the 3820TG being regularly sold on US sites.
Bronsky
-
why?
the 5650 is not that powerful of a GPU for the computer to be bottlenecked by the CPU. -
There are many applications that are not GPU dependent. For those uses, the better CPU is worth the wait. If gaming is the only use for your 3820TG, the I5-450M will probably suffice. Depends on your needs.
I suspect that those of us waiting on higher spec'ed machines will be waiting for, at least, another month or so. I sure hope I'm wrong.
Bronsky
-
wow Bronsky! You think the timelineX series will come to usa in a less than a month? I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT!!!
-
In HK, they can give you a discount when paying full in cash.
For cash price:
3820TG - HK$ 6500 - US$ 835
i5 430m, ATI 5470
ATI 5650 is not available for 3820TG
4820TG - HK$ $7500 - US$ 964
i5 430m, ATI 5650,
i5-520M version is not yet available for 4820TG
The best bargain is Sham Shui Po, Golden Shopping Centre.
It is right next to the MTR.
-
Yes I can understand if it annoys you in your situation...
Dunno about the 3820TG and I don't type that much on my 4820TG, but so far I don't seem to have this "flex" feeling on the keyboard, maybe i'm too gentle with it lol. But i do use the left side of the keyboard alot while gaming -
LOL! I said "at least another month" ... operative phrase "at least"
Actually, I think that the appearance of the timelines on US sites means that we should have a lot of low spec'ed machines selling witin the next few weeks. Acer should have its distribution problems under control within a month or so. They have already had a couple of months to iron out the problems with production and distribution.
Bronsky
-
no the timeline has a much better gpu
lets see it has much better harware and a bigger screen. what is the point of the alienware m11x really? -
If the m11x wasn't the ugliest notebook on earth it would offer much better screen quality, probably better keyboard, overall better build quality, with comparable (a bit less, ok) gaming capacity; only worse cpu, which many of us I guess wouldn't use. Still, most would go for a new architecture anyway, but it would be an option (slightly thinner would be ideal..) Dell can sure make a killer 13". They should do it soon IMHO, but apparently they don't care about our (i think not that populated) target.
-
So I guess this means the 3820TG with discrete ATI chip will not be available in US, similar situation as with the 3810T. If this is true I will either buy a Sony z or an Asus UL30JT. When you factor in the SSD in the sony and the better monitor then it starts to make sense. Acer is not winning market share in the US by only giving us their lowest end arrandale machines in the 13 inch form factor. -
Is there any confirmation that all of those models will not be configured with discrete graphics?
I realize the listing makes no mention of it, but that doesn't necessarily rule out the possiblity... -
The middle one is a tg, which I believe means discrete graphics
-
That would be tragic. What I feared the most.
-
LOL you guys are too dramatic.
There is at least one 3820TG listed on the PanAm region under the Canadian product ID. That is a 450M/HD????.
There is nothing that indicates other-high spec'ed models will not be following. I just think it will take time. If it takes too long, I have no doubt that someone will be producing a 13.3" notebook with similar specs for all of you to max out your credit cards. Such is life.

Ugh! I'm trying to find the post about 100 pages back where someone described the difference between an i5 that is 430 versus 520. I can't find the post so would someone kindly tell me the difference again?
-
i5 430 Vs 520 really worth the extra wait??? There is not really much in it...
-
The 3820TG id'd in the distributor's list was an I5-450M, one of the refreshed Arrandales. It has similar clock speeds as the I5-520M. Unless you want the I7-620M, I would not wait and would grab the 450M if it comes with an HD 5650 (which we are not yet sure of
).

This is interesting ... Acer is holding a worldwide launch event in New York on May 25th.
Acer holding global event at end of May, no Chrome OS devices planned to launch -- Engadget
Early speculation was that chrome devices were to be anounced. I'm wondering if they are finally going to properly launch the Timelinex series in the US. Maybe we'll even get some to buy after that. We'll see.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea - Acer selling us new laptops...

Review of the 4820TG just posted...
Notebookcheck: Review Acer Aspire 4820TG Timeline X Notebook
It's from a German source. i5-430 + 5650 for 900 euros. Reviewer notes on poor display, but overall a good review. Regarding battery life:

Here's a translated passage from the test:
A note first: The total in the test mentioned benchmarks were carried out with the Radeon HD 5650, integrated Intel GMA HD was always disabled. In the synthetic benchmarks is no way past the grafiklastigen 3DMarks by Futuremark. Here we have the comparison for the GeForce GT 335m decided, inter alia, in the same large and powerful like Asus N82JV is used. In 3DMark 2003 positioned the Radeon HD 5650 with 21 056 to 18 806 points before the loose GeForce GT 335m. In 3DMark 2006 the lead shrinks significantly, and the GeForce GT 335m pulls with 13 363 to 13 430 points almost matched. In 3DMark 2006 the tide is turning in the short term and the Nvidia card, the Radeon HD 5650, not least because of the higher CPU influence ( Core i7-620M N82JV) with 6892 to 6719 points easily overtake the Asus. Total move GeForce 5650 GT and Radeon HD 335m on a similarly good level, with slight advantages for the ATI card.
* * *
According to our benchmarks crystallizes out that Acer with the combination of Intel's Core i5-430M and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 a balanced mix has succeeded to the users with their good performance more than enough for normal everyday tasks like HD playback and multitasking arming. Only in very demanding, to multiple cores optimized applications, the performance difference comes to quad-core CPUs to light and the i5-430M can reach its limits
Interesting stuff.

I hope i can get the i5XX + 5650 in CA soon. Ill need it by the start of July. By laptop is reaching old age lol
-
screen? i've seen it in person, it's so glossy it's like staring into the sun
i like the backlit keys on the m11x but i wish they went towards chiclet style already. im not a fan of the bloated looking keys.
build quality? hahahahahha

show me a 3820TG with a broken hinge and i'll eat my words -
ok i take it back. That picture says it all. It also seems to be very bad plastic material.
Oh.. I WISH I could show you a 3820TG!! -
lol, my current laptop (a Dell Inspiron) is suffering a similar fate. I bought it in Q1 2006, and right now it's being held together by glue and scotch tape. It seems to spontaneously fall apart at a given date or something. I just don't trust any laptops from Dell consumer line anymore...
-
dont get me wrong bro, we are all here to see every company excel in as many areas as i can
i don't want to seem like im bashing the m11x to make the 3820tg appear better
i wish ALL laptops from ALL companies were awesome... acer included.
i have no doubt the 3820tg will inevitably have some problems -
wait, I meant I WISH I could show you meaning I wish I HAD one to show you, don't know if it was clear. Like nemein, my Inspiron is falling apart, but I guess after 4 years you can expect that (can you?). In general i believed Dell to be quite ok build quality, given the prices.
@Nemein: the good thing about the Inspiron is that is easy to disassemble etc. To repair the hinges look at this page and this one -
hi guys,
do any of the new timelineX machines come with a blu ray drive, in particular the 4820TG? Am looking to rip my blu ray discs to external harddrive.
If not, could someone recommend me a laptop with i5 430, 4Gb RAM, dedicated graphics, blu ray drive?
Cheers, -
They don't, your only option i think is the Sony Vaio Z with Blu ray and those specs. -
I have seen quite a few references to the Sony Vaio Z as being another option... when I have looked at pricing on the Z its like $2,000 which is a lot more than what I expect to see for the 3820/4820 models. For me personally this does not make it an option at all. I just wanted to confirm I am not missing anything and this is the Z your all referring to, if there are models cheaper a link would be helpful for me.
Thanks -
Yup, and be prepared to pay an enormous premium on the blu-ray burner in the Z. $500! I wanted the blu-ray bad with my Z purchase, but decided I could just buy a portable USB player for $400 cheaper. That might be a route you could go if you like the Timeline.
