thanks guys,
the sony is way out of my budget, i was looking at the dell studio 15, i5 520, 4Gb, 1Gb ATI 5470, bluray for 850 euro but it is 38mm depth and 2.7kg
really like the look of the acer 3820/4820. if i got an external blu ray drive do you have any suggestions/brands? are they usb connected? i don't think acer do them directly.
Cheers,
-
There is a cheaper way, get a 4850TG. Open it up slide out the Multi DVD-RW drive and put a slim Blu ray in. But doing so will void the warranty of course. You need to buy a panasonic blu ray player like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-4X-Blu-Ray-...ViewItem&pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item3a5a803dd4
The mod will cost around 150-170 USD... -
thanks for the tip, you reckon this would definitely work with the 4820TG?
Not sure if i want to void the warrently immediately though, if something did go wrong slide back in original before sending it in maybe...
will have to wait until the prices for the 4820TG come down, still at £850 for the i5 430 with 5470 video plus shipping to ireland -
I think I am defecting from the 3820. The HP Envy 14 is supposed to have a really nice screen, supports USB 3.0, ATI 5650, solid case, mini sub woofer, 14hr. optional battery slice and a backlit keyboard. It even has a release date! If it is sturdy and gets good reviews, they are getting my $$. Sorry, Acer.
High Performance Laptops w/ Free Audio Software | HP Envy Features -
Wow I thought these two options were just for the Envy 17....That link definitely says otherwise though. Impressive, if it's accurate...
-
Wow if it comes with all the promised specs and feature then it is a great buy.
If it comes with Intel HD Graphics for that price I am calling it a scam.
I am quite disillusion with " starts at" meaning they can have the same model with lower SKU parts. -
i remember seeing this youtube vid of some HP guy saying
"at 999, you still get the i5, you still get the 5650..." -
envy 14 have nice specs but the size and weight is definitely a turn off for me.
-
indeed, plus the flowery design cover.
btw, the envys "mini-subwoofer" isn't stellar at all.
*Now, if they instead had released an improved Envy 13, with i5-520 and HD 5650, less than 4 pounds for $999, that would be a killer laptop. -
Yes, the Envy 13 updated with the specs You've mentioned would be a killer, the Envy 14 is just too big for me.
Without any considerable 13" competitor, I've decided to pull the trigger on the 3820TG, picking it up on Saturday.
I'm moving to the 3820 thread.
For those who're still waiting patiently:good luck, wish You all i5s and i7s! -worldwide that is. -
I think that the DV3 will eventually evolve into what the Envy 13 could have been. Here are some specs from the Singapore site with the new DV3 specs.
HP Pavilion dv3-4000 Entertainment Notebook PC series specifications - HP Home & Home Office products
The I5-520/HD 5450 combination is probably what we could expect in an Envy 13, with a slightly better display. It's a step in the right direction. I can tell you this, I prefer these specs to the 2010 13" MBP. It even supports the Quad-core I7-720QM.
The Envy 14 is going to sell very well IMO. It has the apple look that every one seems to want with a decent display, yada ... yada. If they simply get the unit to market on time, they are worlds ahead of Acer or Asus.

Asus has the U35 series coming. The U35 serie is a UL30 but with upgraded to 35W Core i processors, no optical drive.
-
I guess Asus marketing division has figured out that it is cheeper to anounce notebooks than to actually produce and sell them. Funny how this anouncement comes on the heels of the HP anouncement and the upcomming trade show in June.

HP does have a reputation for bad build quality on the Envys. Hopefully the Envy 14 has great build quality along with its great specs. I'd wait for a couple of reviews to come out before finally thinking about it.
-
Especially when some people who were going to buy the UL30VT then saw the UL30JT may now choose to wait again for the UL35JC.
Keep waiting while the rest of us pounce on the first decent portable laptop that actually gets released.
-
Man I really liked Asus but they have dropped the ball big time here. I think I'm going to wait for the 3820TG.
-
Nah, G310M is NOT on par with Radeon 5650HD for the ASUS UJ35C.
-
4820TG vs Envy 14 vs N82.
Compare please, using SC2 on High to Ultra settings as your benchmark for performance.
Thankssss -
they will all destroy SC2 on ultra settings lol
-
So the 5650 is confirmed to do ULTRA?
-
dude, u are talking about starcraft 2 here, not crysis..
blizzard is years behind in gpu needs
plus im sure they do it on purpose so that they can appeal to a wider market -
cool thanks!
-
no problem..
i myself am a huge diablo fan..
so i wouldn't be considering the 3820TG if it wouldn't be able to play diablo 3 at max settings without breaking a sweat
.
-
Ya, I'm looking at 4820TG vs ENVY 14 vs GX640 still. Good thing SC2 isn't out till July or August, so I dont have to pull the trigger quite yet
-
SC2 is out 27th july it is official
-
Can't wait to get my 3820tg to play Starcraft 2, Guild Wars 2, heck all good games, lol.
-
Hey all - I was thinking about the 1830T for my needs, but doesn't sound like it's coming out for a long while. I therefore broke down and ordered the 3820TG via a friend of mine who is in Polytechnic in Singapore (I'm an American living/working in Singapore). Here's the specs:
Acer Computer Singapore
you can scroll down on that link for specifics. Price in US$ works out to just under $1,200, so no great bargain, but not too shabby. But it does include 3 yr warranty and free external DVD-RW drive, so that's better than a kick in the head.
I really only need something like i5-520 for my needs, but figure i7-620 couldn't hurt. Is that good logic? Any significant battery life loss or similar degredation from the i7-620? Runs much hotter, etc? Or do the pros generally outweight the cons? Any other concerns with the specs listed from the link above? Generally overkill for me (95% MS Office, internet, video with occasional AutoCAD), but too much horsepower is better than too little horsepower!
Thanks for your help. The comments on this thread have been very helpful.

We are all waiting so long for this model. Oh the i7 can't hurt. If you don't mind the extra $$$ go for the top spec. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Seems like a great price with the included 3 year warranty and the free dvd drive. The Core i7-620M is a fine cpu, you should have no problems. -
i might pick up the sony z on sale w/ bing cashback...
i just really really really want a 13" w/ a backlit keyboard...
using my friends macbook pro...
using my own logitech illuminated keyboard at home..
seeing the envy 14 with its new backlit keyboard on youtube..
i won't skimp on any feature for my next notebook!
so backlit keyboard mod for the 3820tg is out of the question? if its remotely possible i'll try anything. -
I have been playing the SC2 beta on a G210 on my main rig at 1920x1200 res and okayish graphics. 5650 should handle it pretty well...
I sent an email to Acer customer services to see if they were planning on releasing the 5650 in UK (only 5470s have been spotted so far). All I got back was blank email.
I really need a laptop to be in my hands be mid-june, but if acer want to screw about then I'm gonna buy the Envy. Especially as the mid-range acers are currently pushing £900 in UK!!!
EDIT:
Play.com and Amazon have them listed:
http://www. play .com/PC/PCs/4-/15175067/Acer-Aspire-Timeline-X-3820TG-434G64n-Core-i5-430M-2-26GHz-4GB-640GB-13-3-Windows-7-Home-Premium-64Bit-Laptop-Notebook-LX-PTB02-015/Product.html
"Due for release on 31/05/2010"
http://www. amazon .co.uk/Acer-Timeline-Notebook-processor-Dedicated/dp/B003L0OYXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1274200641&sr=8-1
Another confusing point here. The UK Acer website says only
AS3820TG-434G64n and AS3820TG-334G50n are available.
German website says same models with addition of 3820T-334G32n:
http://www. acer .de/acer/productv.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=de&kcond61e.c2att101=78255&sp=page16e&ctx2.c2att1=9&link=ln438e&CountryISOCtxParam=DE&ctx1g.c2att92=80&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2075623928#wrAjaxHistory=1
The weird thing is that the UK sites lists the AS3820TG-434G64n as having an ATI 5470 (and 9 cell battery!?!) and the AS3820TG-334G50n as the Intel HD - which is wrong.
The german site says:
434G64n - i5 430M + ATI 5650
334G50n - i3 330M + ATI 5470
334G32n - i3 330M + Intel HD
Which is consistent with the existing model numbers. Either the UK is in fact only getting models with dedicated graphics, or someone at Acer UK got their numbers mixed up...
Still according to play we only have till the 31st of May to find out... -
I followed up with synnex the Canadian distributor on the 3820tg listed on their website. They sell to retailers. I was told it will be in stock for retailers to order on june17. It is the i5 430 and ATI radeon videocard is 5470.

I am really starting to lose faith in seeing an i5 + 5650 before the fall...
Actually, I am starting to lose faith in North America seeing ANY Timeline X notebooks with the 5650 to be honest... -
Hey I guys I am new to the forum here
I live in taiwan, and as far as I know they only sell the 3820TG with 5470 or the 4820TG with the 5650. I cannot find any info on the 3820TG wth 5650 here. It makes me wonder if that version actually exist
BTW gaming wise how would the 5470 version compare to the 9600m/LGP310? They are not that far off each other according to Notebookcheck.com.. -
Yes, the configuration with the 5650 is offered in Singapore and many European countries. It will most likely be one of the versions offered in the U.S.
-
Here in Denmark we got a few with the i5-450m hd5650. example Komplett.dk - Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG 13.3"HD LED
the shop also got the pc with a 640gb harddrive and a 9cell batt.
The 14" 4820TG with same specs is abit cheaper then the 13,3" here tho, so thats what im buying. -
Hey thanks for letting me know
I hope they will release the 5650 here too. It's weird but it seems like you guys seem to get better deals on computer/laptops even though Acer and Asus are taiwanese company. I am noticing that the more high end laptops or actually more expensive here than it is US. -
It's probably because it's a larger market with more competition. Everyone sells everything here, and it's the largest market in the world for anything. Thus, better deals as every company competes for our dollars. Taxes probably have something to do with it too. Many countries also have a value added tax which is often included in the price the consumer pays. If we are fortunate the U.S. government will not seek to impose a VAT to pay for their extraordinary spending spree. We would have a collective fit if they tried to introduce that on top of the taxes we already pay.
-
Yea that's true. Even the local stores here can't compete with newegg prices
But I still hope they'll release the 3820tg with 5650 here sometime soon. I was checking out some of the forums in chinese, and the people here are wondering about the same thing too
-
mate i was considering new vaio z but for the price and what you get with acer vaio is out of the question. i5 and ati 5650 will blow most 15 inch laptops out of the watter with 1.8kg weight and 12/h battery life i couldnt wish for more. I dont care about backlid keyboard but about overclocking that gpu and play all games at highest with nice frame rates on portable durable laptop. That 9cell looks like and awesome way to cool a bit more when overclocking lifting it up a bit. might not even need a cooler for it xD i cant wait to get my hands on 3820tg and play some bad company 2 and gta iv xD long live PC gaming lool

Dam!!! - NVM the article was just updated
confirming that the DV3 will get the 5450.
It orignally said tha tthe DV# was going to get a 5650 and I got all excited.
- oh well - back to waiting for the 3820TG. Sorry for the unnecessary excitement.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Wow, the quad core DV3 must get toasty, and lousy battery life. But good performance!
-
The article originally said the DV3 was coming with an HD5650. I freaked! When I checked back, it was corrected. Broke my heart. This would be a great little unit with an I7-620M/HD5650. Alas.
The quad is almost a novelty.
Bronsky
-
Unfortunate HP didn't want to put a 5650 on the DV3. Now we got to keep waiting for our 3820tgs with our delusions of 5650 (hope it aint, but it's looking that way).
-
then, here in my country the 4820tg with i5 430m and 5650 is finally released...i would buy it, but what are the TRUE differences between this and his brother 3820tg with same spec?
-
Display size, DVD and cooling system. The 3820TG has the dual fan cooling system. The 4820TG has an optical drive. Not much else.
Bronsky
BTW, the HP Pavilions have been released on time. The Envy 17 is out and so is the DM4. If you don't need the power of the HD 5650 and can live with a HD 5450 GPU, I would look at the DM4. There is a better selection of I5/I7 GPU's and you can get a nicely I5-540M configured DM4 from the HP CTO for $1,054 less at least 10% bing cash (and maybe 25% if the sale is still on). If you can get the 25%, that would make the price under $800. Actually, with Bing cash back the I5-430M version is selling for $666
while the sale lasts.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq-voodoo-pc/481662-hp-dm4-10.html This model is going to sell very well with its MBP clone-ish look.
That also means that we can expect to see the Envy 14 released on time.
-
ya i know about the double fan of 3820tg... i guess if the 4820's cooling sistem is worse than 3820's
-
The 4820TG cooling system seems to work fine. Only one test on a demo model had any issues. If you want a 14" display I would have no problems going with the 4820TG (other than the fact that I'm starting to hate Acer for not getting its products to the US market
).
