any idea how does the 3820TG compare performance-wise to the new MBP 13"? trying to chose between the two (after dropping UL30JT from the list...)
main use to be large photo files and power-hungry PhotoShop and hooked to external screen.

    From the 3820tg review:

The keyboard's stability and quality impression isn't at all pleasing. The keyboard can already be bent visibly under slight pressure and thus suggests a less stable subconstruction. The keys teeter slightly when they are hit at a corner and thus already appear to be instable. Additionally, the big keys, like space and enter, emit a somewhat clattery stroke noise. How well you can cope with that varies individually. Frequent typists will probably hardly benefit from the keyboard in the long run; "normal" users will likely not have as many problems.

    Ugh :(.

Hey guys, like you I'm waiting for the 3820TG i5/5650.
I'll be travelling to the US in July and I *hope* that it will be already released by then.

The only thing that concerns me is the HUGE number of complaints about defective notebooks being sold by Acer. Many 'dead on arrival' topics here in the forum. Does that concern you as well? That made me think about getting a Asus UL30VT or a UL30JT but I really wanted the 5650 GPU. DO you have any suggestions to 3820TG alternatives? ( alternative = switchable gpu, <= 2kg, HD5650 or equivalent, 5+ hours of wifi + browsing).
My greatest fear is getting a defective notebook while travelling, that would ruin my trip.

BTW I live in Brazil, do you know by any chance if acer's warranty is valid in brazil/latin america ?

    Thanks

mate you wont find anything with this spec with 5+batt life. breaking while travelling could happen to any notebook. i currently have prob second in that class 13.3 lg p310 1.6kb 9600m gt and havent had any problems. 3820tg doesnt have dvd drive either but it has a awesome cooling system which would ensure its durability. for me i see it a great laptop that could score 10000+ score in 3dmakr06 (i only can get 7400 on 13 inch) and gives you option for 9cell and 12hr batt life. dont mind about the keyboard either, prob just gotta get used to it. :p

i still wonder why every review complains about the poor screen, except one as I remember. I am really worried about it, as the screen is important and I'm not asking much, just to be able to read texts without too much hassles.

The weird thing is that the previous generation seemed to have good screens. I have seen a 5810 JUST TODAY, and the screen was excellent!

@Bronsky: why in the world do you type so much? I mean, 6 hours a day full time? Are you a translator?

It wont produce more heat that i5 right ? i checked and it has 35W consumption just like i5. Is there a lot of improvement between i7 and i5 440m in power, gernerall tasks and gaming ? thankkks

The I7-620M version of the 3820TG has only been sold in Singapore so far as I know. The 620M is hotter than the I5-520M (I don't think Acer is offering the 540M in the 3920TG or at least I have not seen one yet).

Here are the temps on the 620M from the intel burn test.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/479584-acer-aspire-3820t-4.html

    Look at post # 38.

The I7-620M hit 89C during the test. But it was Singapore in a non-air conditioned room (31C). The most important thing is that the cores didn't get close to their max temp of 104C and registered stable performance throughout the test. I would expect those temps to be a few degress lower in an airconditioned room but the core is not cool my any measure. The cooling system seems to handle the heat just fine. None of the owners of the Singapore models have complained about the heat causing any problems.

My definition of test is Intel Burn In + Furmark concurrently.
    100% CPU + 100% GPU usage.
The remaining components don't generate much heat.

There is no heat issue, keyboard and screen are great for me.
But mind you that I was using ASUS 1000h netbook before this killler machine.
Just had to share my joy here.

I think a 430M or 450M /hd5650 could be well under a thousand. 450M integrated graphics versions of the 3820T are listed on a few US sites for just over $700.

It's funny, the lack of backlighting on the 3820TG doesn't bother me as much as the lack of it on my 1410T. The 3820TG will spend most of its life on my desk traveling only a half-a-dozen times a year. My 1410T, however, is with me all the time. I would love to have the keys lit in low light situations. Are there any 11.6" units with backlighting?

    Bronsky

@SSJ haven't looked ... waiting to see what Acer says next week in New York. My summer schedule requires me to have a decent notebook by July. I have already decided that I will get the Envy 14 if nothing else breaks. If the 3020TG gets here before then in I7-620M regalia and an HD5650 GPU, then it was meant to be. If Dell releases the XPS 13 in the interim, I would get one of them. If not, I am ordering the Envy 14 on June 27th. I5-540M | HD5650 | 1600 x 900, 350 nit 14.5" display | 160 GB Intel X25-M G2 SSD | 6 cell high capacity battery | extra slice battery | slotted optical drive | 4GB 1 DIM DDR3. I estimate the cost in the range of $1,200 after discounts.

Anybody see this press release on the I5-580. Same speed as the I7-620M with less cache and probably less power drain. This would be perfect for the 3820TG. Out in Q4.

@inm8#2 - I have seen nothing indicating that the I5-540M will be offered in the 3820TG. I think the I5 options are liminted to the 430, 450 and 520 for now. Where ya doin time?

So this would then fit on the 3820TG and would the backlit lights work too? Is it easy enough to swap out the keyboards then?

Well its a slightly more expensive option, its really got me considering that German 3820TG with the i5 430m. You guys can wait an extra 4 months for a i5 520m model which to be honest the difference between the 430 & 520 is next to nothing.

Its like a PIII 800Mhz Vs PIII 850mhz.., which is faster? The 850Mhz one but...you'll not notice the difference between them in the real world. Only in a benchmark.

    Such a big difference.....Not!

    i5 520m CPU score 3dmark06: 2734

For Intel Processor typically it is easily identified
    Intel Core i ( Processor Class Number) - ( 3 Digit SKU Number)( Alphabet 1)( Alphabet 2)

The Processor Class Number is either 3/5 or 7.
3 refers to the low end Processors
5 refers to the mainstream Processors
7 refers to the high end Processors
The 1st Digit SKU Number refers to the instruction set in the Processor.
    3X0 means
    1. No Intel® Turbo Boost Technology,
    2. No Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d),
    3. No Intel® Trusted Execution Technology,
    4. No AES New Instructions
    4X0 means
    1. No Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d),
    2. No Intel® Trusted Execution Technology,
    3. No AES New Instructions
    5X0 and above
    1. All Instruction Set Supported
The 2nd Digit refers to the different Frequency of the Processor Family

For the alphabet there are a number of fixed Alphabets
    M - Mainstream
Q - Quad Core (4 Cores, 8 Threads, No Intel HD Graphics due to high TDP)
    X - Xtreme (Unlocked Multiplier)
U - Ultra Low Voltage (Low Frequency + Low Voltage)
L - Low Voltage (Low Voltage only)

keyboard swap should be very easy.

whether or not that ebay listing is a legit backlit keyboard is my question

i havent seen any ebay sellers with pictures of the backlit keyboard in action.

i have a feeling a lot of these sellers are selling regular keyboards and mislabeling them as backlit.

i emailed a few of the sellers for pictures with backlit on.

if indeed these are legit 3810 backlit keyboards, the only difficult part would be finding a 5v source to connect the power cable to. everything else is a super easy swap.

if this is a viable solution.. looks like i have now found my perfect notebook... 3820TG i5/5650 combo with backlit keyboard
